Greenland Envoy Appointment – Denmark has announced plans to summon the United States ambassador following Washington’s appointment of a special envoy to Greenland, triggering sharp diplomatic tensions between the longtime allies.
The move comes after President Donald Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said the appointment and accompanying remarks by Landry were deeply provocative and undermined Denmark’s sovereignty over the Arctic territory.
Speaking in Copenhagen on Monday, Rasmussen said he was “deeply angered” by statements suggesting the envoy’s role involved incorporating Greenland into the United States.
He described such comments as “totally unacceptable” and confirmed that Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs would formally summon the US ambassador for clarification.
Landry, responding publicly after his appointment, stated that his mission was to help make Greenland “a part of the US,” intensifying diplomatic outrage in Copenhagen.
Denmark has repeatedly rejected any suggestion that Greenland could be annexed or transferred to another country without the consent of its people.
Greenland is a self-governing territory with control over domestic affairs, while Denmark retains authority over foreign policy, defence, and monetary matters.
Rasmussen stressed that any discussion regarding Greenland’s future must respect international law, Danish sovereignty, and the democratic will of Greenland’s population.
He said Denmark expects the United States to behave responsibly and uphold established diplomatic norms between allied nations.
The appointment has also drawn concern from European Union officials, who warned against challenges to Denmark’s territorial integrity.
EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said preserving Denmark’s sovereignty was “essential” and reaffirmed the bloc’s support for its member state.
Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing its strategic location and vast natural resources as critical to US national security.
During previous remarks, Trump refused to rule out the use of force, stating the United States would “go as far as we have to” to secure control.
Such statements have alarmed European leaders and fueled fears of escalating geopolitical competition in the Arctic region.
Greenland occupies a strategically significant position between North America and Europe, hosting important military installations and emerging shipping routes.
The island is also rich in minerals, rare earth elements, and untapped energy reserves, making it increasingly valuable amid global resource competition.
Despite growing interest, leaders in both Denmark and Greenland have consistently maintained that the island is not for sale.
Greenlandic officials have emphasized their right to self-determination, stating that any decision regarding independence or future alliances rests solely with Greenlanders.
An opinion poll conducted earlier this year showed strong support for independence from Denmark but overwhelming opposition to becoming part of the United States.
Greenland’s population of approximately 57,000 has historically viewed outside interference with caution, particularly regarding sovereignty and cultural autonomy.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the envoy appointment “doesn’t change anything for us here at home.”
However, he acknowledged that the move added to already strained relations between Washington and Copenhagen.
Trump announced Landry’s appointment on his Truth Social platform, praising the governor’s understanding of Greenland’s importance to US security interests.
He said Landry would strongly advance American priorities in the Arctic region during his tenure as envoy.
Landry responded on social media platform X, calling the role an honor and describing it as a volunteer position.
His statement, referencing annexation, drew immediate condemnation from Danish officials and diplomatic observers.
The episode follows previous tensions between the two countries over alleged US influence operations in Greenland.
In August, Denmark summoned the US chargé d’affaires after reports emerged of covert efforts aimed at shaping public opinion in Greenland.
Danish intelligence services later warned that the United States was increasingly using economic leverage to assert its will globally.
The agency cautioned that even allies were not immune from pressure tactics, including implicit military threats.
Despite Denmark and the United States both being members of NATO, relations have grown increasingly strained under Trump’s Arctic ambitions.
Danish officials have stressed that alliance membership does not override national sovereignty or international legal frameworks.
Analysts say the latest dispute reflects broader competition among global powers for influence in the Arctic as ice melts open new routes.
Russia, China, and the United States have all expanded their Arctic strategies in recent years, raising security concerns across Europe.
Denmark has urged restraint and dialogue, warning that unilateral actions could destabilize regional cooperation.
