Commercial driver assaults LASTMA officer

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed outrage over a violent confrontation that left one of its officers seriously injured at the busy Ojota Interchange in Lagos.

The agency described the incident as a direct attack on lawful authority and a disturbing reflection of growing hostility toward traffic enforcement officials.

The altercation reportedly began when officers on routine patrol intercepted a painted commercial Volkswagen bus along the Ojota–Ketu corridor.

According to the agency, the vehicle was operating in violation of established Lagos traffic laws, with its passenger door left open while carrying commuters.

Officials noted that such conduct exposes passengers to grave danger and creates additional risks for other motorists navigating the already congested route.

Upon being flagged down, the commercial driver allegedly refused to comply with directives from enforcement officers.

Instead of submitting to lawful inspection, he reportedly attempted to evade arrest by steering the vehicle onto the road median in a desperate bid to escape.

Witnesses said the maneuver disrupted traffic flow and heightened tension in the area.

The escape attempt was short-lived. Mechanical failure forced the vehicle to halt, preventing further movement.

At that point, what began as a traffic stop escalated dramatically. Authorities disclosed that the driver retrieved a broken bottle from inside the bus and advanced toward the officers in a threatening manner.

In the ensuing struggle, one officer sustained deep injuries to the fingers of his right hand.

Medical responders were immediately contacted, and the injured official was transported to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

Doctors confirmed that the wounds resulted in severe fractures and significant blood loss.

Emergency surgery was performed, including reconstructive procedures on two fingers.

The officer remains under observation and is said to be responding to treatment.

Despite the suspect fleeing the scene, the bus involved in the incident was promptly impounded in line with statutory provisions.

The agency confirmed that investigations are ongoing in collaboration with security agencies to track down the assailant and ensure he faces prosecution.

Officials emphasized that no act of violence against public servants would be tolerated.

Reacting to the development, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the attack in strong terms.

He described it as a calculated act of aggression that undermines efforts to instill order and discipline on Lagos roads.

According to him, traffic officers operate under clear legal mandates designed to safeguard lives, and any assault on them amounts to a challenge to public safety structures.

He further reiterated that LASTMA remains committed to enforcing compliance with traffic regulations across the state.

The agency, he said, will intensify monitoring and enforcement activities, particularly in high-traffic corridors such as Ojota Interchange, where violations frequently occur.

Commercial drivers were urged to cooperate with officers and respect lawful directives.

Transport analysts say the incident highlights the pressures facing traffic enforcement personnel in major urban centers.

Lagos, being one of Africa’s busiest cities, experiences daily congestion, and compliance with safety standards is critical to preventing accidents.

Experts argue that reckless behavior, such as driving with doors open while in motion, can easily lead to fatal outcomes.

Community leaders around Ojota Interchange also expressed concern over the violence. Some residents called for increased security presence during enforcement operations to deter confrontations.

Others stressed the need for public education campaigns aimed at reinforcing respect for traffic officers and awareness of Lagos traffic laws.

In reaffirming its position, LASTMA stated that its officers are trained to handle challenging situations professionally but warned that violent resistance would attract severe legal consequences.

The agency maintained that the safety of road users, pedestrians, and commuters remains its top priority.

This episode serves as a sobering reminder of the risks faced by those tasked with maintaining order on Lagos roads.

As investigations continue, authorities are hopeful that swift prosecution will send a clear message that attacks on enforcement personnel will not go unpunished.
