Christa Pike execution attempt: Death row inmate receives life-saving care after failed lethal injection

The Christa Pike execution attempt has left the Tennessee death row inmate critically ill and receiving “life-saving medical care” at a Nashville hospital after two lethal injections failed to kill her.

Pike, 50, was taken by ambulance to the hospital after surviving Tennessee’s attempt to execute her at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on Wednesday.

Her lawyer, Randall Spivey, said Thursday that Pike remained alive but that her legal team did not yet know her prognosis or have a full update on her condition.

“Christa is alive right now,” Spivey told reporters. “We don’t have a sense of her prognosis or much update on her health at the moment, but we do know that she is alive right now.”

The incident has renewed scrutiny of lethal injection and the broader use of capital punishment in the United States.

Christa Pike receives life-saving medical care

Pike’s lawyers said she was critically ill and receiving life-saving treatment at a Nashville hospital following the failed execution.

The lawyers have called the execution attempt “chemical torture” and renewed their request that Tennessee commute Pike’s death sentence to life imprisonment.

Tennessee has suspended all executions for the remainder of 2026 while officials investigate what happened during the procedure.

The suspension was ordered by Governor Bill Lee, who had rejected Pike’s clemency request earlier in the week.

Lee described the failed execution as a tragedy and said the state would conduct a third-party review.

“There is no one that wanted what happened last night to happen,” Lee told reporters. “It’s a tragedy, and it’s deeply disturbing to me that that has happened in this state. The people deserve better and we’re going to make sure that happens.”

Lawyers describe injuries after injections

Pike’s lawyers said the execution differed from many previous botched lethal injections because prison officials appeared to successfully administer the drugs through two syringes.

According to Spivey, Pike’s right arm turned purple and her skin blistered around the injection sites.

After the second injection, Pike reportedly complained that her arm hurt and felt as though it was “about to explode.”

Her lawyers believe the drugs may have entered the tissue of her arm rather than being delivered directly into her bloodstream.

The precise medical cause of what happened remained under investigation.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Pike appears to be the first known person to survive after execution drugs entered her body.

Robin Maher, the organisation’s director, described the incident as an unusually serious failed execution, saying it was unlike other botched executions in the modern era.

Tennessee suspends executions

Governor Lee ordered a suspension of scheduled executions in Tennessee for the rest of the year following the incident.

He also ordered a third-party investigation into Wednesday’s failed execution.

The move came after Pike’s lawyers had already raised concerns about the state’s lethal-injection procedure and asked officials to consider alternative execution methods.

Pike’s legal team had unsuccessfully petitioned Tennessee to use hanging or a firing squad instead of lethal injection.

Tennessee changed to a one-drug lethal-injection protocol using pentobarbital in 2024.

The source of the pentobarbital used in Pike’s execution attempt was not immediately clear. Her lawyers said information about the source of the drugs had been withheld from them.

Execution protocol under scrutiny

The case has drawn attention to the practical difficulties involved in carrying out lethal injections.

Pike’s lawyers said prison officials spent roughly an hour establishing intravenous access before the drugs were administered.

Spivey said Pike herself cooperated with the execution team and even provided guidance about how they could try to access her veins.

“Miss Pike was kind and she was cooperative and she was at peace the whole time,” Spivey said. “She was ready.”

Even after the first dose was administered, Spivey said Pike continued speaking with her spiritual adviser and members of the execution team.

He said she wished them “loving kindness.”

The account has added another dimension to the investigation into the failed procedure.

Pike was convicted of murder at 18

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at the Knoxville Job Corps vocational centre.

Pike was 18 at the time of the killing.

According to court records cited in the case, Pike, her 17-year-old boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and another companion lured Slemmer into a wooded area, where they tortured and killed her.

Pike and Shipp confessed to the murder and were convicted of first-degree murder.

The case received widespread attention because of the brutal circumstances surrounding Slemmer’s death.

Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, has supported the execution.

Lawyers highlighted Pike’s childhood trauma

Before the execution, Pike’s lawyers had asked Governor Lee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment without parole.

They cited her history of childhood violence, neglect and sexual abuse, as well as diagnoses of bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Their clemency petition said Pike had suffered sexual abuse during childhood and argued that her developmental history should be considered because she was only 18 when she committed the murder.

The lawyers also cited evidence that Pike’s mother drank heavily during pregnancy and argued that this may have affected Pike’s brain development and ability to control impulses.

Lee rejected the clemency request on Monday, two days before the execution attempt.

Failed execution raises wider death penalty questions

The Christa Pike case has renewed attention on the challenges surrounding lethal injection in the United States.

Pike’s failed execution was the second such incident in Tennessee this year.

In May, prison officials abandoned an execution attempt involving another death row inmate after they were unable to find a suitable vein for the lethal injection.

Pike’s case differs because the execution drugs appeared to have been injected, yet she survived and subsequently required emergency medical treatment.

Her lawyers have argued that she should now be allowed to live rather than face another execution attempt.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, also criticised the prolonged suffering associated with failed execution attempts and said Pike’s case demonstrated the need for wider consideration of abolishing capital punishment.

“The prolonged suffering – physical and mental – arising from multiple failed execution attempts is abhorrent, and cruel,” Turk said.

Most countries around the world have abolished the death penalty, while 23 US states have also ended capital punishment.

What happens to Christa Pike now?

Pike’s immediate medical condition and prognosis remained uncertain as of Thursday.

Her lawyers said she was alive and receiving life-saving medical care, but they had not received a complete medical assessment.

The third-party review ordered by Governor Lee is expected to examine the execution procedure, the administration of the lethal-injection drugs and the circumstances that left Pike critically ill.

The investigation could also become relevant to any future legal proceedings concerning Pike’s sentence or any attempt to carry out another execution.

For now, Tennessee has suspended executions for the rest of the year.

The case leaves Pike alive after an execution attempt that officials intended to end her life, while her lawyers continue to seek commutation of her death sentence to life imprisonment.

The outcome of the medical treatment, the independent review and any subsequent court proceedings will determine the next stage of the case.
