The Chelsea ownership change has been confirmed, with Todd Boehly and Mark Walter selling their ownership interests as Clearlake Capital Group moves to take full control of the Premier League club.
Chelsea announced that affiliates of Clearlake will acquire Boehly’s ownership interest and Walter’s stake, while Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder in the ownership group.
The development brings an end to Boehly’s four-year period as Chelsea chairman and marks a significant change in the ownership structure that began when the consortium purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Reuters reported that the latest transaction is understood to be worth around £950 million ($1.27 billion), although the reported figure represents the value attached to the stakes being acquired rather than a fresh purchase of the entire club.
Clearlake Takes Full Control of Chelsea
Clearlake Capital, co-founded by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, has been Chelsea’s majority owner since the 2022 takeover.
The latest transaction allows the investment firm to acquire the remaining ownership interests held by Boehly and Walter, giving Clearlake full control of the club.
Chelsea said there would be no changes to its day-to-day operations, leadership or strategic direction following the transition.

“Clearlake intends to continue building on the strategic course the club is now on and realising the ambition that the ownership group has developed together,” Chelsea said in its statement.
The club also confirmed that “there will be no changes to the day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy at the club.”
That assurance means the ownership transition is not being presented as an immediate restructuring of Chelsea’s football or business operations.
Boehly Ends Four-Year Chelsea Ownership Role
Boehly became one of the most prominent figures at Stamford Bridge after the consortium led by himself and Clearlake completed the purchase of Chelsea in May 2022.
He subsequently served as chairman and played a visible role in the club’s activities, including its recruitment strategy and substantial investment in the squad.
The consortium’s original acquisition was reported by British media to be worth £4.25 billion, with the ownership group also committing substantial investment to the club’s infrastructure, academy, women’s team and other areas.
The latest Todd Boehly Chelsea exit therefore represents a change from the ownership arrangement established four years ago.
Boehly said he was proud of his time at the club and expressed confidence in its future under Clearlake.
“It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of Chelsea Football Club,” Boehly said.
“I have valued my partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group, and the collective decisions and investment we have made to support the immediate and long-term success of the Club.”
He added: “I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership.”
Clearlake Sets Out Long-Term Plans
Eghbali and Feliciano paid tribute to Boehly and highlighted the investment made during the period of shared ownership.
“Todd has been an important partner throughout our ownership of Chelsea, and we thank him for his time and contribution as chairman,” they said.
“He will always be a part of the Chelsea story and family.”
The Clearlake co-founders said the firm’s focus would remain on investment in Chelsea’s infrastructure, sporting performance and player development.
“Clearlake has served as Chelsea’s majority owner since 2022, and as we move to full control our focus is to continue investing in the club’s infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and delivering long-term success for Chelsea and the club’s supporters,” they added.
Chelsea’s official announcement similarly stated that the ownership group had invested across the men’s and women’s senior teams, youth squads, training facilities at Cobham, medical and player-support resources, academy development and the club’s sporting and business leadership.
What Happens to Chelsea After the Ownership Change?
The immediate message from the club is continuity rather than a major operational overhaul.
Chelsea has explicitly said that there will be no changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy following Clearlake’s move to full control.
That means the transition does not automatically signal changes to the coaching structure, sporting leadership or wider administrative operations.
The club is also beginning the new phase with its existing long-term investment plans still in place.
Clearlake has said it intends to continue developing the infrastructure and sporting side of Chelsea, while the ownership group’s stated objective remains long-term growth and sporting performance.
The change nevertheless gives Clearlake greater control over the direction of the club than it had under the previous joint ownership arrangement.
Mark Walter Also Leaves Chelsea Ownership
Boehly is not the only major American investor leaving Chelsea.
Mark Walter, who was also part of the consortium that purchased the club from Abramovich, has sold his ownership interest as part of the transition.
Walter and Boehly were previously linked through their ownership of several major American sports franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Walter’s departure from Chelsea comes only weeks after he was involved in another major sports transaction.
The Independent reported that Walter sold the Los Angeles Lakers in a record $12.5 billion deal, adding another significant change to his portfolio of sports interests.
His Chelsea departure now leaves Clearlake with full control of the Premier League club.
Chelsea’s Position on the Pitch
The ownership transition comes at the beginning of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Chelsea had recorded two victories, one draw and one defeat from its opening four league matches and was sixth in the table at the time of the announcement.
The club’s sporting performance will therefore continue under an ownership structure that is now controlled entirely by Clearlake.
The ownership change comes after several years of substantial spending and squad development under the Boehly-Clearlake partnership.
Since the 2022 takeover, Chelsea have invested heavily in players and infrastructure while also developing their academy and women’s football operations.
The latest transition does not change that stated strategy.
From Abramovich to Clearlake
The latest development completes another stage in Chelsea’s ownership history following the departure of Roman Abramovich.
The Boehly-Clearlake consortium completed its acquisition in May 2022 after a sale process that followed the UK government’s sanctions against Abramovich.

At the time, the new ownership group said it intended to invest in Stamford Bridge, the academy, the women’s team, Kingsmeadow and the Chelsea Foundation.
Four years later, the structure has changed again.
Boehly and Walter have now exited their ownership positions, while Wyss remains involved and Clearlake moves from majority ownership to full control.
Chelsea’s announcement indicates that the transition is intended to build on, rather than abandon, the strategic direction established since 2022.
For supporters, the most immediate question will be how Clearlake’s increased control affects the club’s long-term sporting ambitions, recruitment, infrastructure projects and relationship with the wider Chelsea community.
For now, however, the club has made clear that the Chelsea ownership change will not bring immediate changes to its day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy.
