Anambra police arrest 26-year-old suspect over girlfriend’s murder

Anambra police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal domestic violence murder, highlighting ongoing concerns about relationship-related crimes.

The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 26-year-old man, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, for his alleged involvement in the murder of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother.

The tragic incident occurred in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra, sparking widespread public concern about domestic violence and relationship-related crimes.

The police confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on January 11, 2026, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to the statement, the suspect was taken into custody on January 7, 2026, by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, following a detailed investigation into the murder that happened on December 9, 2025.

Contrary to circulating reports suggesting that the murder was linked to unpaid debts, the Anambra police clarified that investigations indicate no involvement of third parties.

The command described these reports as false, misleading, and inconsistent with the facts gathered during the probe, emphasizing that the evidence directly implicates the suspect.

During police interrogation, Chibuike reportedly admitted to attacking Mmadubugwu with a knife, stabbing her in the neck around midnight on the day of the incident.

The attack resulted in her death, a confession that has helped investigators reconstruct the events leading up to the crime.

“According to the suspect, the act was allegedly motivated by suspicion of infidelity,” the statement noted.

Further insights from the investigation revealed that the suspect had faced severe financial difficulties while attempting to set up a business for the victim.

Police said he reportedly went bankrupt and became a chronic debtor, a situation that caused significant emotional distress and ultimately contributed to the fatal confrontation.

In an attempt to mislead investigators and facilitate his escape, the suspect allegedly planted a fabricated letter claiming he had been kidnapped by creditors.

Police described this as a calculated effort to divert attention from the true circumstances of the murder.

As part of the ongoing investigation, detectives have visited the mortuary where the deceased’s body was deposited.

Investigators are also examining additional evidence that may shed light on the sequence of events and the suspect’s state of mind before the incident.

The Anambra State Police Command stressed that the murder has sparked outrage in the community and renewed discussions about domestic violence, particularly within intimate relationships.

Law enforcement officials used the case to highlight the dangers of unresolved disputes escalating into violence, urging residents to seek lawful and peaceful resolutions whenever conflicts arise.

Members of the public have been encouraged to report early warning signs of domestic abuse to authorities to prevent avoidable loss of life.

“The community must remain vigilant, and early intervention is key to preventing tragedies like this,” SP Ikenga stated.

Authorities have assured residents that the suspect will be formally charged in court upon the completion of investigations.

The case is expected to serve as a reminder of the serious legal consequences for individuals involved in domestic violence and murder.

The Anambra police also emphasized their commitment to ensuring that justice is served and that perpetrators of violent crimes are held accountable.

By taking swift action in this case, law enforcement aims to restore public confidence and discourage similar acts in the future.

Community leaders and civil society organizations in Anambra have expressed concern over the rising incidents of domestic violence and have called for enhanced public awareness campaigns.

They urge couples and families to adopt conflict-resolution strategies and counseling mechanisms to prevent disputes from escalating into violence.

Experts note that cases like this highlight the broader issue of domestic violence in Nigeria, where emotional distress, financial pressures, and relationship conflicts can sometimes lead to tragic outcomes.

Authorities in Anambra and beyond are now considering additional measures to educate the public, strengthen reporting channels, and improve support services for victims of domestic abuse.

This incident has also reignited discussions about the role of mental health support in preventing domestic violence.

Psychologists and social workers have emphasized the importance of providing counseling for individuals experiencing financial stress or emotional instability to reduce the likelihood of violent acts.

As the investigation progresses, the Anambra State Police Command continues to gather evidence and interview witnesses to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined.

The community is urged to cooperate with authorities and avoid spreading unverified information that could hamper the investigative process.
