The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old woman, Edeh Osinachi, for allegedly committing child abuse by inflicting serious injuries on a 17-year-old girl, reportedly living with her as a domestic help in Awka, the state capital.
The shocking incident has drawn public attention to the safety of children living outside their biological families.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect allegedly punished the girl with a hot iron, leaving visible and severe injuries on her body.
The arrest was made following the intervention of the Anambra State Ministry of Education, which handed the suspect over to law enforcement on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
Investigations revealed that the victim’s injuries were first noticed by school authorities during a teaching session.
Teachers immediately questioned the teenager and learned that she had been assaulted by her guardian for allegedly using her guardian’s mobile phone to make calls without permission.
“The victim disclosed that she had used the phone without consent, which angered her guardian.
“As a form of punishment, the suspect allegedly used a hot pressing iron on her body, causing severe burns,” SP Ikenga stated.
The suspect reportedly admitted to the act during police interrogation, confirming the child abuse allegations.
This case has raised significant concerns about the welfare of minors living under the care of others.
Experts have noted that children working as domestic helps are often vulnerable to abuse, neglect, and exploitation, especially in homes where proper supervision and parental guidance are lacking.
