Hundreds of youths protest escalating community insecurity in Sarkin Noma, Nasarawa, blocking Lafia-Makurdi highway after deadly attacks and kidnappings.
Hundreds of youths in Sarkin Noma village, Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, staged a dramatic protest on Friday, blocking the Lafia-Makurdi highway to draw attention to the growing community insecurity in their area.
The demonstration, which halted traffic for several hours, was a response to a series of violent attacks, kidnappings, and killings that have terrorized the village for months.
The protest followed a night raid in which around 50 armed men reportedly invaded the community, firing indiscriminately and abducting an elderly resident, identified as Mathew Anzaku.

Locals say the attackers, suspected to be herders, targeted villagers traveling at night, especially those returning from markets or farm work, creating a climate of fear and anxiety.
Ogu Iliya, a youth leader in the village, explained that residents quickly mobilized to defend themselves.
“We could not sit by while our community was under attack. During the clash, two young men, Adgizi and Godiya, were shot dead,” he said. In a show of grief and protest, residents carried the corpses to the highway, intensifying the blockade and capturing public attention.
This incident marked the 12th attack in recent months on Sarkin Noma, according to Iliya.
“People here live in constant fear. Nighttime travel is extremely risky. The gunmen kidnap residents and demand ransom. Our community cannot continue under such conditions,” he lamented. The elderly man abducted in the latest attack remains missing, with no word on his condition.

The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed that security operatives, led by Commissioner of Police Shettima Mohammed Jauro, were deployed to restore order.
SP Ramhan Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer, reassured residents that steps were being taken to protect the community and prevent further violence.
Experts note that the situation in Sarkin Noma reflects a broader pattern of community insecurity across rural areas of central Nigeria.
Armed herders, limited policing, and uncoordinated local defense structures contribute to a dangerous environment for farming communities.
“These attacks are part of a systemic problem that requires long-term solutions, including intelligence-led policing and community protection strategies,” said a security analyst.
Local leaders are calling for urgent government intervention, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions.
Proposed measures include establishing community policing units, improving communication between residents and security agencies, and addressing the underlying conflicts between farmers and herders.
Many villagers have stopped going to the farm or markets, fearing abduction or robbery, which has serious economic consequences.
The protest also highlights the resilience and activism of youth in the community.
“This is a plea for help, not a political statement,” said a resident. “We demand protection so our families can live without fear.”
While police reinforcements have arrived in Sarkin Noma, villagers remain wary of traveling at night, and the psychological toll of persistent insecurity is becoming increasingly severe.
Authorities warn that without a coordinated response, the cycle of attacks may continue, further worsening community insecurity.
Analysts stress that a combination of rapid-response security operations, community engagement programs, and economic development initiatives is necessary to stabilize rural areas and protect lives.
The Friday protest in Sarkin Noma serves as a tragic yet powerful reminder that community insecurity can disrupt daily life, threaten livelihoods, and escalate tensions if left unaddressed.
Residents hope that heightened attention from authorities and the public will prompt swift and sustained action to restore safety and normalcy to their village.
