The Senate of Yakubu Gowon University has taken decisive action to uphold discipline on campus, approving the expulsion of 28 students for various violations of university regulations.

This move underscores the institution’s commitment to fostering a safe and conducive learning environment while maintaining strict adherence to student discipline standards.
The decision was reached during the 191st Regular Senate Meeting, which took place on Thursday, January 28, 2026, at the university’s main campus.
The deliberations followed a thorough review of the findings and recommendations submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC), the body responsible for investigating and adjudicating breaches of the university’s code of conduct.
According to a press statement by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the expelled students were found culpable of multiple serious offences.
These included threats to life, physical assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, and involvement in cult-related activities.
Additionally, some students were penalized for possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the university admission portal, and repeated failure to appear before the disciplinary committee despite multiple invitations.
“The Senate’s decision reflects our zero-tolerance approach toward behaviours that threaten the integrity of the academic community,” Dr. Yakoob said in the statement.
“These actions are taken not only to maintain order but also to reinforce the principles of student discipline across the institution.”
Beyond the expulsions, the Senate also approved the withdrawal of certificates for 15 former students who failed to honour repeated invitations from the committee.
This measure serves as a stern reminder that accountability extends beyond current enrollment and that compliance with disciplinary procedures is mandatory for all students, past or present.
The statement further indicated that nine students were exonerated after investigations revealed no wrongdoing on their part.
Meanwhile, 33 other students received formal warnings for various infractions, including conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and physical altercations.
These warnings are intended to guide students toward proper conduct while maintaining the principles of student discipline and campus safety.
Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the university’s unwavering commitment to enforcing rules and regulations without compromise.
He stressed that maintaining student discipline is essential for ensuring a productive learning environment and safeguarding the academic reputation of the institution.
Professor Fawehinmi commended the Student Disciplinary Committee for its diligence and meticulous handling of all cases.
He emphasized that the committee’s role is critical in investigating violations impartially, ensuring that justice is both fair and transparent.
“The academic integrity of our university is sacrosanct,” he said.
“We are determined to sanction anyone who violates our standards while also guiding students toward responsible citizenship and academic excellence.”
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to take personal responsibility for their actions and avoid behaviors that could jeopardize their academic progress.
He highlighted that the enforcement of student discipline is not merely punitive but also instructional, aimed at shaping a culture of accountability and ethical conduct.
To complement disciplinary measures, Professor Fawehinmi announced that the university would continue to strengthen student engagement, counseling, and orientation programmes.
These initiatives are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to make responsible decisions, foster positive peer relationships, and prevent potential disciplinary infractions.
He emphasized that proactive engagement, coupled with clear enforcement of rules, is central to cultivating a disciplined and vibrant campus community.
The university’s commitment to student discipline reflects a broader recognition that academic excellence and ethical conduct are inseparable.
By taking swift and transparent action against misconduct, Yakubu Gowon University aims to reinforce its reputation as an institution that values both scholarly achievement and moral integrity.
