The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has offered fresh insight into the forces that shaped his emergence as governor of Rivers State in 2015, insisting that his victory was rooted in political strength rather than reliance on any sponsor or godfather.
Speaking during a media interaction in Abuja, Wike reflected on his political journey and used it to challenge common assumptions about how elections are won in Nigeria.
According to him, his experience demonstrates that electoral success is not always dictated by elite backing but by a candidate’s ability to connect with the people and build genuine support.
Recounting the events surrounding the Rivers election, Wike explained that the political environment at the time was far from favourable to him.
His predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, had shifted allegiance to another political platform and supported a rival candidate.

Despite this, Wike said he was able to secure victory convincingly, a development he believes underscores the power of grassroots mobilization and personal credibility.
He stressed that his story should serve as a lesson to aspiring politicians who may feel discouraged by the absence of backing from influential figures.
In his view, political strength is built over time through consistency, performance, and the trust of the electorate, not merely through alliances with powerful individuals.
Wike also used the opportunity to caution against superficial approaches to governorship ambition.
He argued that many individuals enter the political arena without fully understanding the demands and sacrifices involved.
According to him, the decision to run for office must go beyond the desire for recognition or status.
He emphasized that anyone considering an election must first engage in honest self-assessment.
This includes evaluating one’s readiness to face the pressures of campaigns, the scrutiny of the public, and the uncertainties that come with the political process.
Without such preparation, he warned, many aspirants risk being overwhelmed.
In his remarks, Wike highlighted that elections are not won through loud rhetoric or media visibility alone.
Instead, they require careful planning, strategic thinking, and a strong support base.
He noted that voters are increasingly discerning and are more likely to support candidates who demonstrate seriousness and competence.
He further pointed out that some aspirants treat elections as opportunities for self-promotion or negotiation, rather than genuine attempts to serve.
According to Wike, such approaches weaken the integrity of the political system and often lead to disappointment for both the candidates and their supporters.
The FCT minister reiterated that political strength is evident in the actions and track record of a candidate.
He explained that individuals who have made meaningful contributions in their communities or previous positions are more likely to earn public trust.
For him, this credibility cannot be fabricated during campaigns but must be built over time.
Wike also noted that the absence of an incumbent governor’s support should not be seen as a barrier to success.
Drawing from his own experience, he maintained that determination, resilience, and a clear vision can outweigh the influence of political structures aligned against a candidate.
In addition, he stressed the importance of psychological readiness, describing elections as intense and demanding processes.
He said candidates must be prepared for both victory and defeat, as well as the emotional and physical toll that campaigns can take.
Throughout his address, Wike returned to the idea that political strength remains the defining factor in any successful electoral bid.
He argued that when a candidate possesses genuine support and a strong foundation, external opposition becomes less decisive.
He concluded by urging aspiring leaders to focus on building credibility, engaging with the electorate, and developing a clear agenda.
According to him, these elements, rather than sponsorship or political noise, ultimately determine success in Nigeria politics.
