Liverpool farewell game

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has come under fire from Wayne Rooney, who has called for the Egyptian star to be dropped for the club’s final Premier League match of the season against Brentford, following what he described as “selfish” public criticism of manager Arne Slot.

The controversy erupted after Salah posted a strongly worded message on social media following Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa, urging the club to return to a more aggressive attacking identity reminiscent of the Jurgen Klopp era. The comments were widely interpreted as a subtle criticism of Slot’s tactical approach and have since sparked debate about leadership and unity within the squad.

Salah is set to leave Liverpool this summer, meaning the Brentford fixture will be his final appearance for the club he joined in 2017.

Rooney’s Strong Criticism of Salah

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, speaking on his BBC programme The Wayne Rooney Show, did not hold back in his assessment of Salah’s actions, describing the timing and tone of the comments as damaging.

Rooney said:

“I find it sad at the end of what he’s done and what he’s achieved at Liverpool. It’s not the point for him to come out and aim another dig at Slot.”

He continued, questioning Salah’s fitness for Liverpool’s playing style:

“He wants to play heavy metal football, so he’s basically saying he wants Jurgen Klopp football. Now I don’t think Mo Salah can cope with that type of football any more. I think his legs have gone to play at that high tempo and high intensity.”

Rooney then went further, directly calling for the forward to be excluded from Liverpool’s final match of the season:

“If I was Arne Slot, I’d have him nowhere near the stadium in the last game. I had it with Alex Ferguson. I had a disagreement and fallout and at Alex Ferguson’s last game at Old Trafford, he left me out of the squad for that reason.”

He also accused Salah of undermining the dressing room environment at a crucial moment:

“He’s almost just dropped the grenade and said he doesn’t trust and believe in Arne Slot and almost thrown his teammates who are going to be there next season and let them have to deal with that as well.”

Rooney Labels Salah’s Actions as ‘Selfish’

Rooney expanded on his criticism, arguing that Salah’s comments were not only poorly timed but also unfair to his teammates and manager.

“I think he’s been very selfish in what he’s done in the two occasions. It’s a shame and fans will be on his side, but I think when you look deeper into it and having been in a dressing room in a similar situation to that as well, Mo Salah knows exactly what he’s doing.”

He added that public criticism of a manager is unacceptable, regardless of a player’s status or legacy:

“That’s your manager. You can’t publicly disrespect him twice the way he has and get away with it.”

Rooney concluded by reiterating his belief that Slot should take firm disciplinary action:

“If I was Arne Slot, I’d have to pull rank and just say, listen, you’re not coming anywhere near the place on Saturday, whether you like it or not. I really doubt he will do it, but I think he should.”

Salah’s Position and Liverpool Context

Salah’s comments followed Liverpool’s defeat to Aston Villa, where he urged the club to return to a more aggressive attacking identity. His remarks echoed elements of Jurgen Klopp’s high-intensity philosophy, but were widely interpreted as indirect criticism of current manager Arne Slot’s tactical direction.

The situation is further complicated by reports that Salah will leave Liverpool this summer, bringing an end to a highly successful spell at Anfield that began in 2017. His final match against Brentford is now set against a backdrop of controversy and internal tension.

Dressing Room Tension and Leadership Questions

The public nature of Salah’s remarks has sparked wider debate about leadership dynamics within elite football squads, particularly during transitional periods between managers.

Rooney’s intervention has amplified scrutiny of how senior players should behave when expressing dissatisfaction, especially when a club is preparing for structural change.

Some observers argue that Salah’s comments reflect frustration and a desire to preserve Liverpool’s traditional attacking identity. Others believe his intervention risks undermining managerial authority at a sensitive time.

The controversy surrounding Mohamed Salah’s comments and Wayne Rooney’s response has added an unexpected layer of tension to Liverpool’s season finale. While Salah prepares for his emotional farewell against Brentford, debate continues over whether his public remarks crossed a line or reflected legitimate concern over the club’s direction.

What remains clear is that the situation has exposed deeper questions about authority, leadership, and the balance between player influence and managerial control in modern football.
