Wall Street may never sleep again as US markets move toward 24/7 trading

The familiar clang of the opening and closing bells at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) may soon lose its central role in global finance, as Wall Street edges closer to a future where trading never sleeps.

In what analysts describe as one of the most significant structural shifts in modern market history, major US exchanges are laying the groundwork for round-the-clock stock trading, a move that could fundamentally reshape how capital flows across borders.

The push toward nonstop operations reflects deeper changes in financial technology, investor behavior, and competition among global exchanges. While regulators have yet to give final approval, momentum is building behind a concept that would have been unthinkable just a decade ago.

Wall Street 24/7 trading and the end of traditional market hours

At the center of the transformation is the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the parent company of the NYSE, which recently confirmed it is developing a platform capable of supporting Wall Street 24/7 trading.

The proposed system would rely on digital tokens designed to mirror listed shares, enabling trades to occur continuously with near-instant settlement.

If approved by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the platform would allow investors to buy and sell US equities at any hour of the day, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.

NASDAQ, Wall Street’s other major exchange, is also reportedly exploring similar extended-hours models, raising the likelihood that continuous trading could soon become an industry standard rather than an exception.

For a market that has operated on fixed “banker’s hours” for more than a century, the shift represents a quiet revolution.

From shouting floors to digital speed

In the early days of Wall Street, trading required physical presence. Investors crowded onto exchange floors, shouting orders, waving slips of paper, and manually recording transactions. That system made the idea of continuous trading impractical, if not impossible.

Digitisation has changed everything. Modern markets are already dominated by algorithms, electronic order books, and high-speed data centres.

According to market strategists, the only remaining barrier to round-the-clock trading has been tradition rather than technology.

Off-hours trading has steadily expanded since 2019, but it surged dramatically after 2024, when average daily volumes outside regular trading hours exceeded $61 billion, according to NYSE data.

That growth signalled rising appetite among retail investors and overseas participants who find US market hours inconvenient.

Instant settlement as the real prize

While nonstop trading grabs headlines, some economists argue the more consequential change lies elsewhere.

Traditional stock trades typically settle the next business day, a process known as T+1. ICE’s proposed platform aims to compress that window to near-instant settlement.

Economists say this could significantly reduce counterparty risk, free up capital faster, and improve market efficiency.

Steve Hanke, a professor of applied economics at Johns Hopkins University, has noted that while 24-hour trading itself may not dramatically boost liquidity, faster settlement could give Wall Street a powerful competitive edge over rival financial centres.

By shortening the time between trade execution and final ownership transfer, Wall Street could become more attractive to institutional investors seeking speed, certainty, and reduced operational risk.

Not everyone is convinced the benefits of Wall Street 24/7 trading outweigh the costs. Critics argue that most market-moving news still occurs during US business hours, limiting the usefulness of overnight trading.

Hanke has described previous experiments with night trading as inefficient, suggesting they attracted limited volume while increasing operational complexity.

Others warn that thinner liquidity during off-hours could increase volatility, making prices more vulnerable to sharp swings triggered by small trades.

Supporters counter that markets evolve with investor behaviour, not the other way around. As more participants demand flexibility, exchanges risk losing relevance if they cling to rigid schedules.

Wall Street 24/7 trading

One of the strongest arguments for nonstop trading is demographic. Younger investors, raised on cryptocurrency markets that operate 24/7, increasingly expect the same accessibility from traditional assets. For them, the idea that stock markets “close” can feel outdated.

Globalisation is another factor. Nearly 18 percent of US equities were held by non-US investors in 2024, according to US Treasury data.

For traders in Asia, Africa, and parts of Europe, Wall Street’s current hours often fall deep into the night.

Extended trading could make US stocks more accessible to international investors without forcing them to operate at inconvenient times, potentially expanding Wall Street’s global reach at a moment when competition from Europe and Asia is intensifying.

Despite the excitement, analysts caution that traditional institutional investors are unlikely to abandon conventional trading hours.

Large asset managers, pension funds, and banks still operate within structured business schedules, and many rely on support systems that remain offline on weekends.

As a result, early adoption of nonstop trading is expected to be driven primarily by retail investors, proprietary traders, and global participants rather than by the largest pools of capital.

Still, even modest participation could be enough to permanently alter market structure over time.

Regulatory approval remains the final hurdle. The SEC will scrutinise issues ranging from market stability and investor protection to cybersecurity and operational resilience. Any approval is likely to come with strict conditions and phased implementation.

Yet few observers doubt the direction of travel. As technology blurs the boundaries of time and geography, financial markets are under pressure to follow suit.

Whether Wall Street 24/7 trading becomes the norm overnight or unfolds gradually, its emergence signals a broader truth: the global financial system is entering an era where time zones matter less, speed matters more, and tradition no longer guarantees permanence.

For investors, exchanges, and regulators alike, the bell that once defined the trading day may soon become little more than a ceremonial echo from the past.
