The United Kingdom has called on international partners to enhance Ukraine’s long-range missile capabilities, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasizing the urgent need for strengthened military support.
Speaking at Downing Street, Starmer described the UK as Kyiv’s “closest supporter and ally” and said the country is committed to helping Ukraine face Russian aggression decisively.
“Volodymyr, it’s really good to be able to welcome you here again for a crucial bilateral meeting and for discussions with the coalition of the willing,” Starmer said.
The British prime minister highlighted the progress made this week in supporting Ukraine, noting “huge steps forward” in coordinating aid, training, and military assistance among allied nations.

Starmer stressed that while progress had been made, there remained significant work to do on expanding Ukraine’s long-range missile capability to counter Russian attacks effectively.
“Through seeing his majesty, through our meeting, and through the coalition of the willing, we reaffirm again our support for you and Ukraine,” he added.
The UK leader emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum on providing military equipment, advanced intelligence, and logistical support to ensure Ukraine can defend its territory successfully.
Starmer also addressed the ongoing Russian attacks on civilians, saying the UK condemns the targeting of children and non-combatants, offering condolences for the suffering endured by Ukrainian families.
“I do think that this week we can really bear down on Russian oil and gas,” he noted, pointing to sanctions and energy restrictions as part of the broader strategy to pressure Moscow.
The prime minister underscored the need for a coordinated approach among allies, calling on the coalition of willing nations to commit to long-term security guarantees for Ukraine’s defense.
Starmer praised President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s courage and determination, highlighting Kyiv’s leadership in signaling a path forward despite the ongoing conflict and immense humanitarian challenges.
The British government has also been working with international partners to expand Ukraine’s air defense systems and artillery reach, measures that complement the call for long-range missile support.
“Further we can do on capability, particularly long-range capability, and of course, the vital work for coalition of the willing when it comes to security guarantees,” Starmer said.
These remarks come amid growing discussions in London about the need to accelerate the supply of weapons, ammunition, and technology to Ukraine in order to sustain its defense operations.
The coalition of willing nations, which includes European partners and other allied states, aims to provide coordinated support while deterring further Russian aggression on Ukrainian soil.
Starmer’s comments reinforce the UK’s position as a leading advocate for Ukraine in international forums, emphasizing both diplomatic and military channels for delivering critical support.
“Russia’s continued attacks, increasingly targeting civilians, show an absolute unwillingness to engage,” he added, emphasizing the necessity of international solidarity in deterring further escalation.
The UK prime minister highlighted the diplomatic dimension of military support, explaining that sanctions, arms coordination, and intelligence-sharing are crucial alongside supplying long-range missiles.
Zelenskyy, attending the meeting at Downing Street, reaffirmed Ukraine’s gratitude for the support, stating that international coordination strengthens both defense capacity and morale in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian president also underscored that long-range capabilities are essential for countering strategic threats and safeguarding civilian populations from missile attacks.
Starmer said the coalition’s work would focus not only on immediate military needs but also on longer-term commitments to maintain Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.
“By combining political will, economic measures, and enhanced military capability, we can present a united front against Russia,” he emphasized, calling for decisive action from all allies.
The UK has already taken steps to increase defense assistance, including supplying advanced artillery, intelligence support, and humanitarian aid alongside discussions on long-range missile deployment.
President Zelenskyy noted that every additional capability strengthens Ukraine’s resilience and its ability to respond effectively to Russian offensives, reducing threats to civilian areas.
Starmer said coordination with international partners remains central, adding that unity among allies ensures resources are used efficiently and that strategic gaps in Ukraine’s defense are addressed.
The British prime minister also highlighted the importance of public diplomacy, noting that demonstrating strong international support deters adversaries while reassuring Ukrainian citizens of continued backing.
“Security guarantees are vital, and through the coalition of willing, we are working to ensure Ukraine has the tools it needs to protect its territory,” he explained.
The UK’s commitment to Ukraine reflects both historical ties and strategic interests, with Starmer emphasizing that supporting Kyiv is critical to European stability and global security.
In closing, Starmer said, “We must act decisively, provide capability where it’s needed, and continue to coordinate with allies to ensure Ukraine can defend itself successfully against Russian aggression.”
The meeting between Starmer and Zelenskyy reinforced the shared objective of deterring Russian advances while maintaining strong diplomatic channels to coordinate further aid and security measures.
Analysts note that long-range missile support would significantly enhance Ukraine’s defensive posture, allowing counterattacks and greater strategic flexibility against Russian forces.
Starmer concluded that the coalition of willing nations must not only deliver equipment but also commit to ongoing intelligence and logistical support to maximize effectiveness in Ukraine.
The UK government is expected to continue working closely with NATO partners to assess Ukraine’s needs, ensuring military aid is timely, targeted, and sufficient to meet emerging threats.
President Zelenskyy expressed confidence that strengthened cooperation and long-range missile capabilities would allow Ukraine to defend its citizens and reclaim occupied territories.
With the coalition of willing convening, Starmer said discussions will include further measures to restrict Russian energy revenues, tighten sanctions, and coordinate defense assistance to Ukraine.

Both leaders emphasized that the international response must be robust, continuous, and adaptable to ensure Ukraine maintains the strategic advantage and civilian protection amid ongoing hostilities.
Starmer’s statements underline the UK’s ongoing leadership role in supporting Ukraine, calling on other nations to match commitments with concrete military and diplomatic contributions.
The coalition’s work will continue over the coming months, ensuring that Ukraine’s long-range missile capacity, defensive infrastructure, and allied coordination remain central to European security strategy.
By strengthening military capabilities, reinforcing sanctions, and expanding coalition support, the UK and its partners aim to sustain Ukraine’s defense and deter further Russian escalation.
Zelenskyy thanked the UK for unwavering support and emphasized that long-range missile assistance will be crucial for Ukraine’s resilience and ability to protect civilians.
Both leaders agreed that coordination among allies, intelligence-sharing, and joint military planning are key to maximizing Ukraine’s operational effectiveness and safeguarding democratic institutions.
The UK’s push for enhanced missile support aligns with broader strategic efforts to limit Russian expansion and provide Ukraine with credible deterrence against continued attacks.
Starmer stressed that international unity is essential, saying that the coalition of willing nations must continue to present a coordinated, resolute response to Russian aggression.
“This is not just about military equipment; it is about solidarity, political will, and demonstrating that Ukraine has strong partners ready to defend its sovereignty,” Starmer added.

The UK reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s long-term defense, emphasizing that allied coordination, long-range missile support, and strategic security guarantees are vital for ongoing resistance.
The meeting at Downing Street marked a pivotal moment in UK-Ukraine relations, reinforcing both the military and diplomatic dimensions of international support for Kyiv.
