A deadly Jos train accident at Phototek Junction claimed two lives after a train from Bukuru crushed a tricycle that ignored warnings to stop.
A fatal Jos train accident on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, left two people dead and two others injured after a train collided with a tricycle at Phototek Junction in the Abattoir community of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The tragic incident occurred when a passenger train traveling from Bukuru to Jos crushed the tricycle, which attempted to cross the railway track despite repeated warnings.

Eyewitnesses described the Jos train accident as both horrifying and avoidable, saying the train had continuously sounded its horn before reaching the crossing. However, the tricycle rider ignored the alarm and tried to beat the train’s speed.
According to one eyewitness, Mary Phillip, the train operator did everything possible to prevent the collision, but the tricycle driver refused to slow down.
“The train was blaring its horn repeatedly, but the tricycle rider sped across the line. Within seconds, the train rammed into the tricycle, killing the driver and one passenger instantly,” she narrated with shock.
Another eyewitness, Mohammed Ibrahim, corroborated her statement.
“It happened around 11 a.m. The train came from Bukuru heading to Jos and crushed the tricycle. Two died immediately while two female passengers sustained injuries. It was a terrible scene,” Ibrahim said.
Community members who rushed to the scene found the tricycle mangled beyond recognition, while the victims’ bodies lay trapped under the wreckage. Emergency responders later arrived to evacuate the corpses and move the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Confirming the Jos train accident, the spokesperson for the Jos Railway Station, Adam Abdullahi, blamed the tricycle rider’s recklessness for the tragedy.
“Our railway official had already stopped the rider at the level crossing, but he ignored the warning. The train was moving at considerable speed and couldn’t halt immediately. That led to this unfortunate loss of lives,” Abdullahi explained.
He added that the Nigerian Railway Corporation has consistently warned drivers to be cautious at level crossings, stressing that railway safety is a shared responsibility.
Residents of the Abattoir community expressed outrage and grief over the tragedy. They blamed inadequate safety infrastructure, such as the absence of automated barriers and signal lights, for repeated road-rail collisions in Plateau State.
A community youth leader, Ibrahim Yusuf, said the area had witnessed near-miss incidents in the past.
“This is not the first time we are seeing careless road users trying to outrun trains. The government should fix proper barriers and post safety officers at all major crossings,” he urged.
The Plateau State Government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation have since launched investigations into the cause of the Jos train accident.
Officials say they are considering new measures to strengthen railway safety in Plateau, including the installation of electronic gates and warning sirens at major crossings.
Railway experts also called for improved public awareness campaigns to educate commercial drivers about the dangers of crossing railway tracks carelessly.
They advised that proper enforcement of safety laws and penalties for offenders would significantly reduce future tragedies.
The train collision in Jos has once again highlighted Nigeria’s growing railway safety challenges. Despite modernization efforts in recent years, level crossing accidents continue to claim lives due to human error and inadequate infrastructure.
Residents of Jos South are still mourning the victims, describing the crash as a painful reminder of the need for caution and discipline on the roads.
As investigations continue, families of the deceased are calling on authorities to ensure justice and better safety enforcement across all train routes in the state.
Experts emphasize that preventing another tricycle crash in Jos will require a blend of stricter enforcement, community awareness, and infrastructural upgrades. They warn that without immediate action, more lives could be lost in similar accidents.
The Jos train accident remains a sobering lesson about the consequences of ignoring safety signals, a tragic event that has once again placed Nigeria’s railway system under the spotlight for reform and accountability.
