President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Professor Idris Muhammad Bugaje as the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), granting him a second and final five-year tenure.

The move signals continued commitment to technical education reform as a key pillar of national development.

The decision followed what government officials described as a comprehensive review of Bugaje’s performance since he first assumed office in March 2021.

During that period, he has been credited with initiating structural changes that aim to reposition Nigeria’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system for greater relevance in a rapidly evolving global economy.

Under his leadership, the NBTE has pursued a broad agenda centred on technical education reform, focusing on aligning training systems with industry needs.

This includes modernising outdated curricula, strengthening institutional frameworks, and improving the overall quality of technical education across the country.

These efforts are widely seen as necessary steps toward closing the skills gap in Nigeria’s labour market.

A statement from the Presidency highlighted that nearly 100 national curricula were either newly developed or reviewed during Bugaje’s first tenure.

These updates were designed to reflect emerging trends in technology, manufacturing, and service industries.

By integrating global standards into local training systems, the administration believes the technical education reform agenda will better prepare Nigerian graduates for both domestic and international opportunities.

In addition to curriculum development, the NBTE has worked to enhance collaboration between training institutions and the private sector.

This approach ensures that students acquire practical, job-ready skills rather than purely theoretical knowledge.

Industry partnerships have also contributed to internship opportunities, apprenticeships, and real-world exposure, all of which are critical to successful workforce integration.

The government’s endorsement of Bugaje’s second term is also tied to its broader policy direction under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

This framework places strong emphasis on education as a driver of economic growth, with particular focus on skills acquisition and innovation.

Within this context, technical education reform is viewed not just as an educational priority but as an economic necessity.

Observers note that Nigeria’s youthful population makes the success of these reforms especially important.

With millions of young people entering the labour market each year, there is increasing pressure on the education system to deliver practical competencies that can lead to employment or entrepreneurship.

Strengthening TVET institutions is therefore seen as a strategic response to unemployment and underemployment challenges.

President Tinubu, while approving the reappointment, urged Bugaje to consolidate on existing achievements and ensure that ongoing initiatives are fully implemented.

He emphasised that continuity in leadership would help sustain progress and avoid disruptions in reform programmes.

The President also stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in technical education reform, noting that long-term impact depends on consistent execution.

Beyond policy and institutional improvements, there is growing recognition that public perception of technical education must also change.

For years, vocational training has been undervalued compared to traditional academic pathways.

However, current reforms aim to elevate the status of technical careers by demonstrating their relevance in today’s economy.

This cultural shift is considered essential for attracting more young people into skilled professions.

Looking ahead, the renewed mandate for NBTE leadership is expected to deepen ongoing reforms and expand their reach.

Stakeholders anticipate further investment in infrastructure, digital learning tools, and teacher capacity development.

These measures are intended to strengthen the foundation already laid and ensure that the benefits of technical education reform are felt nationwide.
