Rising insecurity in Nigeria draws Atiku Abubakar’s warning as attacks spread, prompting urgent calls for coordinated action and global support.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a strong warning over the worsening insecurity in Nigeria, describing the current wave of violence as a dangerous threat to national unity and long-term stability.

His remarks come amid renewed attacks across several regions, raising fresh concerns about the country’s security architecture.

In a statement released via his official X account, Atiku condemned the persistent incidents of terrorism and banditry, noting that the scale and frequency of attacks have become deeply troubling.

According to him, the surge in insecurity in Nigeria reflects an urgent need for decisive leadership and coordinated national response.

He stressed that attacks targeting innocent citizens not only cause immediate loss but also erode public trust and weaken the nation’s collective identity.

Atiku warned that if left unchecked, the growing insecurity in Nigeria could further divide communities and undermine efforts toward sustainable development.

The former vice president also expressed heartfelt condolences to families who have lost loved ones in recent attacks.

He acknowledged the pain and disruption experienced by affected communities, emphasising the need for empathy alongside firm action.

His message highlighted that beyond statistics, the crisis represents real human suffering that demands urgent attention.

Reiterating the constitutional duty of government, Atiku stated that safeguarding lives and property must remain the top priority of any administration.

He called for improved intelligence gathering, better coordination among security agencies, and a renewed sense of urgency in tackling the insecurity in Nigeria.

According to him, restoring public confidence requires visible and measurable progress in curbing violence.

Beyond domestic efforts, Atiku also recognised the importance of international collaboration in combating terrorism.

He commended the United States of America for its continued support in Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations.

He noted that such partnerships play a critical role in strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to complex security threats.

His comments come at a time when several parts of the country are experiencing fresh violence.

In Borno State, a coordinated assault on a military base in Benisheikh highlighted the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups.

The attack targeted troops under Operation HADIN KAI and resulted in the loss of several soldiers, including a senior military officer.

The Benisheikh attack has since drawn national attention and renewed debate over military preparedness.

The North-East region continues to battle insurgency linked to Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Despite years of military operations, these groups have maintained the capacity to launch deadly strikes, contributing significantly to the ongoing Nigeria security crisis.

Violence has not been limited to the North-East alone. During the Easter period, separate incidents in Kaduna State and Benue State further illustrated the widespread nature of the threat.

In Kaduna, gunmen reportedly attacked worshippers in a rural community, killing several individuals and abducting others.

Such incidents have intensified public concern over the broader pattern of terrorism in Nigeria.

In response to the growing tension, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended condolences to the families of fallen soldiers and affected civilians.

He also reassured members of the Armed Forces of continued government support, urging them to remain steadfast in their duty despite the challenges.

Security analysts have increasingly pointed out that addressing the insecurity in Nigeria requires more than military action alone.

They argue that long-term solutions must include economic development, community engagement, and deradicalisation programmes aimed at preventing recruitment into extremist groups.

Atiku’s statement ultimately reflects a broader national concern that the current situation demands urgent and unified action.

He concluded with a message of resilience, expressing confidence that Nigeria can overcome its challenges if leaders and citizens work together with determination and shared purpose.

As the country continues to navigate these security challenges, the call for stronger leadership, effective policy implementation, and sustained international cooperation remains at the forefront of national discourse.
