Thailand School Shooting leaves eight dead as teen kills grandparents then attacks Bangkok School

Thailand school shooting 2026 has left eight people dead. A 14-year-old boy killed his grandparents at home. He then drove to Debsirin Nonthaburi school and opened fire on students and teachers.

The attack happened Friday morning near Bangkok. Police said the teenager shot five people at the prestigious school. He later took his own life inside the building. More than 30 others were wounded.

The Thai health department confirmed nine victims remain in critical condition. Emergency workers treated injuries to the back, chest and arms. Two teachers were found dead on upper floors of the school.

The shooter used a gun belonging to his grandfather. He fired at least 26 bullets during the rampage. Officers found him with 34 additional rounds of ammunition still on his body.

Arsit Sampantharat, permanent secretary of the interior ministry, briefed media. He said the suspect stayed inside after the first reports. A lockdown was declared and lifted about 30 minutes later.

English teacher Prompong Namwong described the panic. A student burst into his classroom seeking shelter. Teachers shouted that a mass shooting was happening downstairs near the main hall.

Prompong hesitated when recalling the attacker. He did not know whether to call him “killer” or “student.” At that moment he thought “I was going to die, for sure.”

When police knocked, Prompong feared the worst. It was rescuers coming to evacuate them. Students ran out with only socks on. Shoes were left scattered by tables and stairways.

It is customary in Thailand for students to remove shoes outside classrooms. In the rush to escape, hundreds of pairs were abandoned across the campus grounds and hallways.

By afternoon the sports field was full. Officials, medics and reporters gathered there. The country’s leader promised new legislation to control firearms after the tragedy.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul spoke to reporters. He said only government officials on duty should carry guns. He gave no details on ownership rules or mental health checks.

“Bangkok gun violence” is not new. Thailand has the highest civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia. A 2017 survey ranked it 13th globally for small arms possession per capita.

Recent years have seen several mass shootings. Attacks have hit schools, malls, and communities. In 2022 a gunman in the northeast killed 37 people, including 22 children, in one day.

Experts say the licensing system is weak. Associate professor Piyaporn Tunneekul noted there is no mental health screening. There are also no required periodic reviews for current licence holders.

Teacher Pichanan Thiengtham was in the staff lounge. She heard continuous shots around 10am. At first she did not believe it was gunfire because it lasted so long without stopping.

She realized the truth when she saw an injured student. She gave first aid and moved the student to the school hospital building. Other staff did the same for classmates.

Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith arrived during the shooting. His team found a male teacher dead upstairs. In another room a female teacher had chest and arm wounds.

Images showed children fleeing barefoot. Parents waited outside the gates for news. Ambulances lined the street as medics carried the wounded to nearby hospitals in Nonthaburi province.

The school belongs to the Debsirin network. It was founded by the Thai royal family. Alumni include prime ministers, scholars and writers. The attack has shaken the entire education community.

Prompong learned via group chat that colleagues died. “They’re all good teachers. I don’t know what to say.” He said life must continue but the shock is overwhelming.

“I never thought to myself that it would happen – really happen – in my school,” he told the Guardian. His voice broke as he described hiding behind a pillar.

Authorities are investigating the motive. Police are also tracing how the teenager accessed his grandfather’s weapon. The home killings happened hours before the school attack.

“Thai gun laws” are now under scrutiny again. Advocacy groups want mandatory screening and safe storage rules. They argue easy access lets troubled teens turn family guns into weapons.

The government says reform is coming. But previous promises after other shootings produced little change. Critics want concrete timelines, not just statements after each tragedy.

Community members held vigils Friday night. Candles were placed at the school gate. Students left notes and flowers for teachers and classmates who did not survive.

International reaction was swift. Embassies expressed condolences. Human rights groups urged Thailand to align gun policy with public health data, not just tradition.

For families, the pain is immediate. Parents identified bodies at hospitals. Others waited for updates on children in surgery. The trauma will last long after headlines fade.

Debsirin Nonthaburi will remain closed next week. Counselors have been sent to help students and staff. The education ministry promised security reviews at all schools nationwide.

The teenager’s grandparents were found dead at home. Police believe they were killed before he took the gun. Investigators are interviewing relatives and neighbors about warning signs.

Thailand now faces hard questions. With high gun ownership and weak oversight, how can schools stay safe? The prime minister’s proposal may be a start, but details matter.

“Debsirin Nonthaburi shooting” will likely push legislation forward. Whether it passes depends on political will. For now, a community mourns eight lives lost in less than an hour.
