The unprecedented achievement was confirmed when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the full list of nominations for the 2026 ceremony.
Ryan Coogler’s supernatural drama surpassed the long-standing record of 14 nominations previously shared by Titanic, La La Land and All About Eve.
The film’s success marks a defining moment for contemporary cinema, particularly for genre films traditionally overlooked by major awards bodies.

Reacting to the announcement, Coogler admitted the scale of recognition initially felt unreal as nominations were revealed early in Los Angeles.
“My dad was counting alongside me and insisted it was 16,” Coogler said. “I honestly thought there was no way he could be right.”
Following confirmation, Coogler joked that his father took pleasure in reminding him that family math beat media speculation.
Despite its dominance, industry observers suggest Sinners may not replicate its nomination haul in actual wins on Oscar night.
Historically, films with record nominations often face stronger competition during final voting, particularly in acting and directing categories.
The closest challenger this year is One Battle After Another, which secured 13 nominations across major and technical categories.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film is widely tipped to challenge Sinners in the best picture and best director races.
Anderson, still seeking his first Oscar win, is considered a frontrunner after decades of critical acclaim and near-misses.
