His return has drawn renewed attention to his political legacy and the impact of his years in public service.

Upon arrival in Abuja, the body of the deceased senator was scheduled to be transferred to the National Hospital, where it would be deposited at the morgue pending official funeral arrangements.

Family members and close associates have confirmed that consultations are ongoing to determine dates and programmes for burial rites, which are expected to attract political leaders from across the country.

Senator Akwashiki passed away on December 31, 2025, at the age of 52, while undergoing medical treatment in India.

His death came as a shock to many Nigerians, particularly his constituents in Nasarawa State, who had followed his political journey from the state legislature to the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, party members, and community leaders who described him as dedicated, approachable, and committed to grassroots development.

Before becoming a senator, Godiya Akwashiki had built a solid political foundation in Nasarawa State. He previously served as Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, a position that helped shape his legislative experience and leadership style.

His transition to the National Assembly in 2019 marked a significant milestone, as he emerged victorious in the senatorial election to represent Nasarawa North.

During his time in the Senate, Godiya Akwashiki was known for his focus on constituency projects, empowerment programmes, and advocacy for improved infrastructure within his district.

Supporters often point to initiatives aimed at youth empowerment, education support, and community development as hallmarks of his tenure.

His re-election in 2023 was widely seen as a reflection of the confidence his constituents had in his leadership and performance.

Politically, the late senator was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) until his death. Within the party, he was regarded as a stabilising figure and a strong voice for inclusive governance.

Party officials have described his passing as a major loss, not only to the SDP but also to Nigeria’s democratic process.

Community leaders say he frequently returned home to engage directly with constituents, listen to their concerns, and provide support where possible.

In the coming days, the family is expected to formally announce funeral details, including dates for prayers, lying-in-state, and final interment.

Observers anticipate that the ceremonies will reflect both his political stature and his personal relationships within and beyond Nasarawa State.

The passing of Godiya Akwashiki has once again highlighted the pressures faced by public office holders and the importance of preserving the legacies of leaders who dedicate their lives to public service.

For many Nigerians, his story remains one of steady political growth, service-driven leadership, and lasting community impact.
