The Nigerian government has launched a Safe School Response Training in Jigawa State, aimed at strengthening the protection of schools and students across the northern region.
The three-day initiative, launched in Dutse, underscores President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring that educational institutions are secure spaces where children can learn without fear of attacks or disruptions.
Assistant Commandant Joseph A. Shuaibu, Head of Training at the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), explained that the programme is designed to strengthen the capacity of coordinators, desk officers, and field operatives.
Participants are trained in modern techniques, advanced technologies, and collaborative strategies essential for maintaining secure learning environments.
“The Safe School Response Training is intended to enhance participants’ ability to ensure safe schools.
“It aligns with the Federal Government’s Safe Schools Declaration and forms part of the NSCDC’s broader efforts to protect students, teachers, and school infrastructure from emerging threats,” Shuaibu stated.
A notable feature of the programme is the inclusion of officers from other security agencies.
This multi-agency approach ensures that responses to threats are coordinated, swift, and effective.
In regions prone to attacks on schools, such collaboration is critical to preventing serious harm and maintaining public confidence in security services.

“This programme ensures our personnel are not only aware of the guidelines but can also apply them proactively to safeguard schools,” he added.
The Safe School Response Training is highly practical. It incorporates scenario-based exercises, workshops, and simulations that allow participants to practice rapid decision-making, inter-agency coordination, and real-time response strategies.
By working through hypothetical threats in a controlled environment, officers develop the skills needed to protect schools from attacks effectively.
Mr. Joseph Apeh, Advocacy and Campaign Coordinator of Save the Children International (SCI) in Jigawa, praised the Federal and State governments for their investment in child protection.
Apeh, who also participated as a resource person during the training, highlighted the critical importance of such initiatives.
“This Safe School Response Training is essential to keeping children safe and ensuring that schoolchildren can learn in peace, without fear of attacks or disruptions,” Apeh said.
He further stressed that the programme helps prevent schools from being exploited for military purposes by state and non-state armed groups.
Supported by the European Union (EU) and organized in collaboration with SCI, the training also emphasizes community engagement, intelligence gathering, and preventive strategies.
Officers are taught to recognize early warning signs of threats, establish communication with local communities, and implement measures to reduce risk before incidents occur.
Technology integration is a key component of the training. Participants learn to use tools such as geographic information systems (GIS), drones, and digital communication platforms to monitor school environments in real time.
This approach ensures rapid reporting, quick deployment of personnel, and effective coordination across multiple schools and districts.
