Russian drone strike in Romania sparks NATO alarm as Europe condemns Moscow

The Russian drone strike in Romania has triggered a wave of outrage across Europe after a Russian drone reportedly entered Romanian airspace and crashed into a residential building in Galați, injuring two civilians and raising fears of a dangerous escalation involving NATO territory.

According to reports from The Guardian, Romanian President Nicușor Dan described the incident as “the most serious security incident” on Romanian soil since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The attack has intensified concerns over regional security as leaders across Europe condemned Moscow’s actions in unusually strong terms.

Romania Condemns Russia After Drone Hits Apartment Block

Romanian authorities confirmed that the drone was part of a wider overnight assault targeting Ukraine’s southern Odesa region near the Romanian border. The explosion damaged a residential apartment block in Galați and injured at least two people.

President Nicușor Dan blamed Russia directly for the incident, stating:

“Full responsibility lies with the Russian Federation.”

He added that Russia’s actions demonstrated “total disregard for international law and for the safety of the citizens of a NATO member state.”

Romania Expels Russian Diplomat

In response, Romania declared the Russian consul general in Constanța “persona non grata,” effectively ordering him to leave the country. Romanian officials also announced plans to strengthen national air defence systems with NATO support.

Dan revealed that NATO had already begun relocating additional defence equipment to Romania following urgent discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

“Romania is a strong ally and will not accept Russia’s aggression threatening the security of Romanian citizens,” Dan said.

NATO Allies React With Strong Warnings

The Russian drone strike in Romania prompted immediate reactions from NATO allies and European leaders, many of whom warned that the incident represented a dangerous escalation.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described the strike as:

“Extremely dangerous and reckless.”

She added that Britain stood ready to defend “every inch of NATO territory.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also condemned the incident, warning that the attack showed Russia’s “willingness to escalate” the conflict beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Czech President Petr Pavel called for a “strong international response,” insisting Russia “must clearly understand that such attacks will not be tolerated.”

Zelenskyy Warns of New Massive Russian Attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed solidarity with Romania and offered assistance “in whatever way is necessary.”

Zelenskyy also warned that Ukrainian intelligence suggested Russia was preparing “a new massive attack,” urging Western allies to increase sanctions and strengthen Ukraine’s air defence systems.

“Russia continues to rely on missiles and further war, not diplomatic steps,” Zelenskyy stated.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that stronger pressure on Moscow was necessary to prevent the war from expanding further into Europe.

Russia Responds to Romania’s Actions

Russia reacted angrily after Romania expelled its diplomat, with Russian state media reporting that Moscow would “respond soon.”

Analysts believe the Kremlin could adopt retaliatory diplomatic measures similar to previous disputes involving European nations.

Growing Fears Over NATO Security

The incident has reignited fears about the possibility of accidental or deliberate escalation between Russia and NATO countries bordering Ukraine.

Security analysts say the strike highlights the increasing risks facing Eastern European nations as the war drags on. Romania, a NATO member sharing a border with Ukraine, has repeatedly reported drone fragments and airspace violations since the conflict began.

European Union officials also condemned the attack, describing it as “another act of unacceptable aggression by Russia.”

As tensions continue rising, NATO leaders are expected to discuss further military reinforcement measures along the alliance’s eastern flank in the coming days.
