Rivers State APC rejects impeachment threats against Governor Fubara, urging lawmakers to protect political stability and democracy in the state.
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly rejected moves by the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, describing the threat as politically motivated and destabilising.
The party warned that the impeachment process could undermine governance and democratic stability in Rivers State.
This development follows formal proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly, which accused Governor Fubara of alleged gross misconduct.
During the plenary session, Speaker Martins Amaewhule criticised the governor, labelling his leadership as a mistake and insisting that his actions merited impeachment.
The move has sparked political tensions in the state and drawn reactions from party leaders.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the APC spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the party condemned the impeachment attempt, calling it untenable and dangerous for the state’s democratic process.
The statement highlighted that while the legislature has the constitutional authority to perform checks and balances, using impeachment as a tool to settle political disputes is unacceptable.
“Our position is unequivocal,” the statement read.
“The Rivers State APC rejects the resort to impeachment against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
“Any attempt to pursue this process risks destabilising our government and undermining political stability in Rivers State.”
The party emphasised that unresolved political conflicts from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should not influence the ruling APC’s internal governance.
The APC noted that the impeachment threat appeared to focus primarily on budgetary disagreements.
The party reminded the public that during the emergency rule period, a budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025, approved by the Senate in June 2025, and subsequently endorsed by the House of Representatives in July 2025, totalling ₦1.485 trillion.
This budget is designed to cover one fiscal year until August 2026, and Governor Fubara is within his constitutional right to operate without presenting a supplementary budget if satisfied with the approved allocation.
“It is important for Rivers people and Nigerians to understand that the Governor is legally empowered to manage the state’s finances under the existing budget and within constitutional provisions,” the APC statement read.
“There is no basis for impeachment over budgetary considerations when all fiscal approvals have been properly executed at the federal level.”
Beyond the budget issue, the APC cautioned lawmakers against succumbing to external influences that could destabilise governance in Rivers State.
Party officials specifically called on APC members of the House of Assembly to resist pressure from political actors outside the chamber who may have ulterior motives.
“We strongly advise all lawmakers, particularly APC members, to stand firm and resist any attempts to destabilise the government led by His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara,” the statement continued.
“The party will take all necessary measures to ensure that Rivers State, under APC leadership, is not undermined by fratricidal disagreements or external interference.”
The party also highlighted the broader implications of the impeachment process for the image of the APC and the state’s political environment.
According to the statement, continuing with the impeachment threat would tarnish the party’s reputation and disrupt ongoing developmental projects aimed at improving the lives of Rivers State residents.
“Any further pursuit of impeachment would drag the party into unnecessary political mudslinging and could hinder the continuous progress and development of Rivers State,” the APC warned.
“We therefore urge members of the House of Assembly to immediately discontinue any actions aimed at impeachment and allow governance and democracy to thrive in the state.”
Political analysts have noted that the APC’s response is both a defence of Governor Fubara’s administration and a message to lawmakers that partisan or politically motivated moves could have consequences for the party’s stability in Rivers State.
The party’s intervention reflects its determination to protect its elected government from internal strife, maintain political stability, and safeguard democratic principles.
The Rivers State APC has made it clear that the impeachment process against Governor Fubara and his deputy is neither justified nor acceptable.
