Police arrest 17-year-old suspect in Maiduguri murder case, launching investigation into shocking late-night attack in Shuwarin II community.
The Police in Borno State have arrested a 17-year-old boy, identified as Amir, for allegedly killing his neighbour’s 35-year-old wife, Rifkatu Haruna, in Maiduguri.
The tragic incident occurred at Layin Shagon Harun, Shuwarin II, around 10:45 pm on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody as the Police conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murder.
Residents of Shuwarin II described the attack as shocking and unprecedented. According to witnesses, the suspect reportedly scaled the victim’s fence under cover of darkness and hid inside the house until the family had gone to bed.
“He waited for the right moment and then stabbed her in the chest and neck,” a resident said. The victim later succumbed to her injuries.
The attacker allegedly stole the victim’s phone and power bank before fleeing the scene. Neighbours suspect that the crime may have been planned to conceal the theft.
Some have even suggested that the teen suspect might have exhibited violent behaviour previously, although these claims remain unverified.
Crucially, the victim’s husband’s sister recognized Amir during the attack and promptly alerted neighbours, who contacted the Police.
Witnesses said the suspect attempted to wash his hands and clothes to eliminate evidence but was apprehended by the Police Crack Squad around 2:30 pm the following day.
ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, confirmed the arrest and assured the public that investigations are ongoing.
“The Police are working to uncover all details of this tragic event and will ensure justice is served,” he said. Authorities are also speaking with witnesses and collecting evidence from the crime scene.
The community remains shocked and fearful. Many residents are now taking extra precautions, including reinforcing fences and installing better lighting.
Community leaders are calling for programs to guide at-risk youth and prevent similar violent acts in the future.
Meanwhile, Rifkatu’s family continues to mourn her loss, leaving the neighbourhood grappling with grief and anxiety.
