Peter Obi’s campaign team has unveiled its 2027 message, urging Nigerians to judge presidential candidates by competence, records, character and ideas.

The presidential campaign season for the 2027 general election has officially commenced, with the media office of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, unveiling him as the “Candidate of Conscience” ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential poll.

The declaration was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the spokesperson of the Peter Obi Media Office, Idris Zekeri.

The media team called on Nigerians to pay close attention to the messages and programmes being presented by all presidential contenders throughout the campaign season, urging voters to assess the candidates based on their records, competence, ideas, character and capacity to lead the country.

According to the statement, Section 98(1) of the 2026 Electoral Act provides for the commencement of campaigns for the presidential election on August 19, 2026, with campaigns expected to run for 150 days before the January 16, 2027 election.

The Obi media office described the period as a defining phase in Nigeria’s democratic journey, arguing that the forthcoming election would go beyond the selection of an individual to occupy the presidential seat.

It said the election would also determine the policy direction, economic priorities and overall future of the country in the years ahead.

The statement presented the contest as a choice between what it described as an established pattern of waste, division and unfulfilled promises and a different approach centred on competence, accountability, productivity and renewed hope.

The media office said Obi’s campaign would focus on moving Nigeria from what it described as a consumption-driven economy towards production, while also reducing the cost of governance, strengthening education and healthcare, improving national security and expanding opportunities for young Nigerians.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, was portrayed by his media team as a politician whose public profile has been shaped by what it described as prudence, fiscal discipline and accountability.

According to the statement, Obi’s political philosophy is anchored on the belief that government should primarily exist to serve citizens and improve their welfare rather than protect political interests.

The media office also stressed that Obi’s appeal was not based on ethnicity, religion or regional affiliation, saying he intended to present himself to Nigerians on the strength of his record, ideas and vision for the country.

“Peter Obi enters this campaign not as a champion of one tribe, one religion, or one region but as a Nigerian seeking judgement based on his record, ideas, and vision,” the statement said.

It added that leadership, in Obi’s view, should be measured by competence, capacity, character, compassion and commitment rather than ethnicity, political connections or entitlement.

The statement further argued that the next 150 days would expose Nigerians to numerous campaign promises, political rallies, slogans and debates, but urged voters to look beyond political rhetoric when making their decisions.

It posed the question of which candidate possesses the integrity, discipline and courage required to address some of the country’s most pressing challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and institutional weaknesses.

According to the media office, Obi believes that rebuilding trust between government and citizens should be central to Nigeria’s political transformation.

It said he had proposed reducing the cost of governance, promoting transparency in the management of public resources, tackling corruption and investing more heavily in productive sectors capable of generating employment and sustainable economic growth.

The statement also linked Obi’s political message to his record as governor of Anambra State, where it said he emphasised fiscal responsibility and investments in areas such as education, healthcare and infrastructure.

It maintained that public office should not be regarded as a reward for political loyalty or a personal inheritance, insisting that leadership must be based on demonstrable competence, character and measurable results.

The media office consequently appealed to Nigerians to scrutinise the records and programmes of all presidential candidates rather than allowing political propaganda, fear, ethnic sentiments or other primordial considerations to determine their choices.

“Democracy is strongest when citizens make informed choices based on facts rather than fear or primordial sentiment,” the statement said.

It further described the 2027 election as an opportunity for Nigerians to decide the kind of country they want to build, insisting that the campaign should focus on issues capable of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges.

The statement said Peter Obi would not ask Nigerians to support him on the basis of ethnicity, religion or political connections but would instead seek their votes based on his experience, ideas and character.

It added that the former Anambra governor’s campaign would continue to promote the principle that government must be accountable to the people and that public resources should be deployed for the benefit of citizens rather than political privilege.

“As campaigns commence nationwide, Nigerians should look beyond slogans and propaganda. They should scrutinise every candidate’s record, ideas, and vision,” the media office said.

It described the period leading to January 16, 2027, as a critical test not only for the presidential candidates but also for the Nigerian electorate, arguing that citizens would ultimately determine the direction of the country through their votes.

The Obi media office urged voters to evaluate every manifesto, campaign speech, debate and policy proposal against the question of which candidate offers the greatest capacity to build a secure, prosperous, united and accountable Nigeria.

The road to January 2027

As the campaign season unfolds, the Obi team said Nigerians would have the opportunity to compare the presidential candidates before making their decision at the polls.

It urged citizens to judge each contender by the quality of their ideas and their ability to provide credible answers to the problems facing the country.

For Obi’s campaign, the central issues include insecurity, unemployment, economic hardship, weak institutions and the high cost of governance.

The media office said the ultimate test should be whether a candidate can offer a practical pathway towards a more secure, productive and united Nigeria.

“Let the campaign begin. Let the people decide. And let Nigeria choose hope over fear, competence over propaganda, and conscience over convenience,” the media office declared.

It concluded by urging Nigerians to participate actively in the political process and make their choices based on what they believe represents the country’s best interest.
