PDP crisis deepens as Fayose declares party in terminal comatose

Ayodele Fayose says the PDP crisis has plunged Nigeria’s main opposition into political decay, accusing its leaders of incompetence and loss of direction.

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has declared that the PDP crisis has reached an irreversible point, describing the Peoples Democratic Party as a political structure in “terminal comatose.”

He said the party, once Nigeria’s ruling powerhouse, has lost both its vision and soul, leaving no sign of revival or unity in sight.

Speaking with journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, Fayose painted a grim picture of a fractured party consumed by internal battles and personal ambitions.

He lamented that the PDP crisis has stripped the once-dominant opposition of discipline, purpose, and moral authority, reducing it to “a shadow of its glorious past.”

According to him, the National Working Committee (NWC) now acts as “undertakers presiding over the burial of the PDP.” He warned that unless a radical rescue mission is launched, the PDP could vanish from Nigeria’s political landscape.

“There is no hope of PDP coming back for now. Even the captains of the ship are abandoning it. Governors are leaving, leaders are defecting — who will hold the party together?” Fayose asked.

Fayose compared the PDP’s condition to a patient surviving on life support. “The PDP is in comatose, under intensive care. Until someone responds to treatment, you can’t say there’s hope. But as it is, there’s no sign of life,” he said.

He blamed the PDP crisis on weak leadership, failed internal democracy, and greed, adding that most current leaders are indifferent to the party’s slow collapse.

“The PDP used to be the pride of Nigerian democracy, but today it is directionless and divided. The soul of the party has been sold for selfish ambition,” he lamented.

Commenting on recent leadership changes, Fayose described the suspension of Ambassador Umar Damagum as overdue, accusing him of running the party “like a personal empire.”

“Damagum caused confusion everywhere. He was incompetent and manipulated his way into office. His suspension is long overdue and good riddance to bad rubbish,” Fayose said.

He expressed cautious optimism that Alhaji Mohammed Abdurahman, the new acting chairman, could begin the healing process if he prioritizes unity and reconciliation.

However, he warned that unless decisive actions are taken, the PDP crisis could deepen beyond repair.

Fayose urged the new leadership to reunite aggrieved members, conduct state congresses, and organize a national convention in full compliance with the party’s constitution.

“The party needs a doctor who can revive it. Maybe Abdurahman will be that doctor. But as it stands, the PDP remains in terminal comatose, struggling for survival,” he stated.

He stressed that unity and sincerity are the only ways forward, saying the PDP crisis should teach members the dangers of division and arrogance.

The former governor dismissed ongoing internal blame-trading, warning that it would only prolong the PDP crisis. He called for sincerity of purpose and renewed commitment to the ideals that once defined the party.

“The problem has gone beyond who caused it,” Fayose said.

“Even our presidential and vice-presidential candidates from 2023 have left. Governors have left. What remains is the carcass of a dead man. Instead of blaming one another, we must focus on rebuilding.”

Fayose outlined steps to rescue the party from total collapse. He said the PDP must return to its founding principles of fairness, equity, and justice. According to him, rebuilding trust among members and ensuring accountability are crucial for survival.

“If the PDP must rise again, it must confront the truth,” Fayose warned.

“The PDP crisis is not just about leadership—it’s about lost values, broken trust, and selfishness. Only honesty and unity can save it.”

Ayodele Fayose’s declaration highlights the depth of the PDP crisis and the urgent need for a total overhaul of the party’s structure.

Once a dominant political force, the PDP now stands at the edge of political extinction, gasping for revival amid leadership squabbles and mass defections.

Whether Alhaji Abdurahman’s leadership can heal the wounds remains uncertain — but one truth is clear: without unity and reform, the PDP may not survive its current political coma.
