PDP crisis escalates after controversial expulsions of key leaders

The PDP crisis deepens as key leaders are expelled, sparking legal battles, factional disputes, and growing tension across party chapters nationwide.

The PDP crisis has reached a new height following the controversial expulsion of eleven prominent leaders over the weekend, escalating tensions across the party.

What was intended by organisers as a convention to consolidate leadership instead intensified existing divisions, drawing sharp condemnation from state chapters, party stalwarts, and political analysts.

The unfolding situation exposes deep structural and leadership disputes, signaling one of the most serious internal conflicts in the party’s recent history.

At the center of the controversy is the PDP expulsion of high-profile figures, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

Many state chapters and stakeholders have denounced the move as procedurally flawed, non-transparent, and faction-driven rather than being a genuine attempt to resolve differences.

Critics argue that the expulsions have not only intensified the PDP crisis but also weakened the party’s cohesion, raising concerns about its readiness for upcoming elections.

A senior party source revealed that both factions are preparing for a fresh wave of legal battles.

Lawyers aligned with rival camps are drawing up motions to assert authority and challenge each other’s legitimacy in court.

Each side believes it holds the true mandate to lead the party, meaning that the next phase of the PDP crisis is likely to be fought more in courtrooms than in political gatherings.

The legal proceedings will be crucial in determining who controls the party and whether its internal processes can regain legitimacy.

Much of the current tension stems from the faction led by Umar Iliya Damagun, which went ahead with the weekend convention despite an explicit restraining order from the Federal High Court.

Ignoring federal directives, the faction relied on an ex parte order from the Ibadan High Court related to a case filed by party chieftain Folahan Malomo Adelabi.

The court had scheduled further hearings for December 8, but the Damagun faction interpreted the order as sufficient authority to proceed, a decision that has been widely criticised as selective and reckless compliance with the law.

The Imo State chapter was among the most vocal critics. Through its Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, the chapter described the convention as “a mere gathering of a lawless Committee of Friends,” claiming that it ignored court rulings, violated internal procedures, and included suspended and expelled members as delegates.

Obiaku labelled the event “a tea party of lawless friends, a sham convention drenched in illegality,” highlighting the extent to which some chapters view the convention as undermining party democracy.

Adding weight to this criticism was the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor the convention. For the Imo PDP, this absence underscored the illegitimacy of the gathering.

Obiaku reaffirmed the chapter’s loyalty to Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, stressing that the constitutionally recognised leadership remains intact and legitimate.

Attempts to dissolve state executives were dismissed as baseless, a move the chapter described as “wishful thinking by those seeking to impose illegitimate authority.”

Political analysts warn that the PDP crisis could weaken coordination among state chapters and erode public confidence in the party’s ability to manage disputes.

If left unresolved, the internal divisions could embolden opposition parties and undermine the PDP’s performance in upcoming elections.

The controversy surrounding the PDP expulsion highlights how factionalism can threaten not only leadership stability but also the party’s electoral viability.

With December court hearings approaching, the party faces a critical juncture. The decisions in the legal cases and subsequent internal processes will likely determine whether the party can restore unity or remain fractured.

For now, both factions are entrenched, and the possibility of reconciliation appears slim as chapters continue to reject the outcomes of the disputed convention. The PDP crisis has, therefore, become a defining issue for the party’s short- and medium-term political prospects.

The recent events underscore the urgency of addressing structural and procedural weaknesses within the party.

Without resolution, the combination of the PDP expulsion, factional rivalries, and public disagreements could permanently reshape the party’s internal landscape.

Observers note that this crisis may serve as a precedent for how internal disputes are handled in the future, with potential implications for leadership transitions, membership rights, and procedural compliance.

The PDP crisis reflects a combination of leadership disputes, contested expulsions, and factional tensions that threaten the cohesion of the party.

As legal proceedings and political maneuvering continue, the party’s ability to resolve its divisions will determine whether it can emerge united or remain fractured.

The stakes are high, and the outcomes will have lasting consequences for both the party and Nigeria’s broader political landscape.
