The Senate has approved N50 million for families of two teachers and three security personnel killed during the rescue of abducted pupils in Oyo State.
The Nigerian Senate has approved a N50 million financial package to support the families of five individuals who lost their lives during the dramatic rescue operation that secured the release of dozens of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
The decision, announced during Wednesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, is intended to honour the sacrifices of two teachers who were murdered while in captivity and three security personnel who died while carrying out the rescue mission.
The victims were among those affected by the abduction of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers, who were kidnapped by armed men from the Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota, and Alawusa communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026.
Their ordeal drew widespread concern across the country and renewed calls for stronger security around schools and rural communities.
After weeks of coordinated intelligence gathering and security operations, government authorities eventually secured the release of all the captives.
However, the successful mission came at a painful cost, with three members of the security forces paying the ultimate price while confronting the kidnappers.

Speaking before lawmakers, Akpabio described the donation as a symbol of national gratitude rather than compensation, stressing that no financial assistance could truly replace the lives that were lost.
He explained that the Senate leadership agreed the families deserved immediate support because of the extraordinary sacrifices made by their loved ones during the operation.
According to him, the N50 million will be shared among the five affected families, including the relatives of the two teachers who were killed while in the custody of their abductors and those of an Army lieutenant, a sergeant, and a private soldier who died during the rescue mission.
Akpabio paid special tribute to the late Army lieutenant, revealing that the officer was only 28 years old when he lost his life while trying to save the abducted children and teachers.
He noted that the courage displayed by the security personnel reflected the commitment of Nigeria’s armed forces and other security agencies to protecting innocent citizens, even in extremely dangerous situations.
The Senate President also praised the collaborative efforts of the nation’s security institutions, saying the rescue operation demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence sharing and joint operations.
He acknowledged the contributions of the Chief of Army Staff, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Inspector-General of Police, the Minister of Defence, and President Bola Tinubu, who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
According to Akpabio, the coordinated response from the various agencies played a crucial role in ensuring the kidnapped pupils and teachers were rescued alive.
While celebrating the successful outcome of the operation, he reminded lawmakers that many families across Nigeria are still waiting for loved ones who remain in captivity.
He therefore appealed to security agencies to sustain the momentum and extend similar rescue efforts to other parts of the country where kidnappings continue to threaten schools, communities, and travellers.
The Senate unanimously applauded the security personnel involved in the operation, describing their actions as courageous and patriotic.
Lawmakers also reiterated the need for continued investment in intelligence gathering, improved security infrastructure, and stronger protection for educational institutions, particularly in vulnerable rural communities.
The latest Senate resolution follows the Presidency’s official confirmation that all the abducted pupils and teachers had regained their freedom.
On July 10, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced that the victims had been successfully rescued through a coordinated security operation.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Onanuga confirmed that security operatives not only rescued all the hostages but also arrested eight suspected kidnappers during the operation.
He further disclosed that several other members of the criminal gang were neutralised during the mission, although further operational details were not released for security reasons.
The rescue brought an emotional end to weeks of uncertainty for parents, relatives, and residents of the affected communities, who had anxiously awaited positive news since the abduction occurred in May.

Despite the relief that accompanied the successful operation, the deaths of the two teachers and three security personnel served as a painful reminder of the human cost often associated with rescue missions in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against kidnapping and armed criminality.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that criminal gangs increasingly target schools and remote communities because of limited security presence, making coordinated intelligence operations essential for preventing future attacks.
The Senate’s decision to provide financial assistance is expected to offer some relief to the grieving families while publicly recognising the sacrifices made by those who died in the line of duty or while protecting the children under their care.
Beyond the financial support, lawmakers expressed hope that the rescue operation would strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s security agencies and encourage continued collaboration among the military, police, DSS, and other law enforcement institutions in tackling kidnapping across the country.
As the nation mourns the lives lost, the Senate maintained that the heroism displayed by the fallen teachers and security personnel will remain a lasting symbol of courage, sacrifice, and dedication to protecting innocent lives.
