Governor Seyi Makinde has honoured eight victims of the Oriire school kidnap tragedy, praising their sacrifice and pledging stronger security across Oyo State.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally paid tribute to the eight people who lost their lives during the prolonged kidnapping crisis involving pupils and teachers from a school in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the deceased as heroes whose courage and sacrifice will forever be remembered.
The governor made the emotional acknowledgement while reflecting on the successful conclusion of the 56-day ordeal that kept families, residents and the entire state in suspense.
Although the safe return of the abducted pupils and surviving teachers brought relief to many, Makinde said the celebration remained incomplete because several lives were lost before the victims regained their freedom.
According to the governor, the tragic incident left deep emotional wounds that cannot easily be erased.
He explained that while the government shares in the joy of families reunited with their loved ones, it also stands in solidarity with those mourning relatives who paid the ultimate price during the crisis.
Among those honoured were three teachers whose lives were cut short at different stages of the incident.
Makinde identified them as Mr. Joel Adeshiyan, who was reportedly killed during the initial attack on the school premises when the kidnappers invaded the community.
He also named Mr. John Olaleye, who died while being held captive by the abductors, as well as Mr. Michael Oyedokun, whose death drew nationwide attention after a disturbing video of his killing surfaced online.

The governor said the teachers demonstrated dedication to education and service, adding that their deaths represent a painful reminder of the dangers innocent citizens sometimes face during criminal attacks.
He noted that their commitment to their profession would continue to inspire many people across the state.
Makinde also honoured five members of the security team who lost their lives while participating in efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims.
Those named include Lieutenant Isaac, Mr. Adigun Suibu, Mr. Isa Saliu, Mr. Rafiu Ayuba and another soldier who died while pursuing the kidnappers during the rescue operation.
According to him, the security personnel displayed exceptional courage by risking their lives to protect others.
Their determination, he said, reflected the dedication of officers who continue to confront violent criminals despite enormous personal risks.
The governor stressed that the sacrifices made by both the teachers and the security operatives should never be forgotten.
He described them as symbols of courage, resilience and patriotism, noting that their actions contributed significantly to the eventual rescue of the abducted pupils and surviving staff members.

He appealed to residents of Oyo State to remember the families of the deceased in their prayers and offer them support during this difficult period.
Makinde said no amount of words could erase the pain of losing loved ones, but the state would continue to honour their memory and appreciate their service.
While expressing sympathy to the bereaved families, the governor acknowledged that the incident exposed the emotional and psychological impact of insecurity on communities.
He noted that beyond the physical losses, such attacks leave lasting trauma on victims, relatives and residents who witness the events.
Makinde reiterated that tackling insecurity remains one of the top priorities of his administration.
He assured citizens that lessons learned from the Oriire kidnapping would strengthen future security strategies aimed at protecting schools, communities and public institutions across the state.
The governor said his administration would continue working closely with the military, police, civil defence and other security agencies to improve intelligence gathering, enhance rapid response capabilities and strengthen surveillance in vulnerable areas.
He maintained that protecting lives and property remains a fundamental responsibility of government.
He further stated that the government would not relent in supporting security agencies with the resources required to confront criminal elements.
According to him, collaborative efforts between government, security institutions and local communities are essential to preventing future attacks and restoring public confidence.
Makinde concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased, asking God to grant comfort and strength to their grieving families.
He also expressed hope that the successful rescue of the surviving victims would mark a turning point in the state’s efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The governor reaffirmed that Oyo State remains committed to creating a safer environment where children can attend school without fear and residents can go about their daily activities in peace.
He said the memory of those who died during the Oriire kidnapping crisis would continue to inspire the government’s determination to build a more secure future for everyone.
