One person was killed and several injured after youths from Buskuwa and Mabani clashed in Bauchi, with police arresting a suspect and opening an investigation.

Tension has returned to parts of Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State following a violent confrontation between youths from Buskuwa and Mabani communities that left one person dead and several others injured.

The violence reportedly started on Monday night, August 24, 2026, after three young men from Mabani were allegedly attacked while travelling towards Buskuwa village.

The incident later escalated into a reprisal attack, with youths from the two communities becoming involved in a confrontation that resulted in additional injuries and the death of a resident.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the development, saying its personnel were mobilised to the area after receiving information about the violence.

According to the command, the first incident occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. when three residents of Mabani were allegedly attacked by a group of youths suspected to be from Buskuwa.

The victims were identified as Babangida Musa, 20; Usman Abdu, 20; and Ya’u Muhammad, 18.

Police spokesman, Nafiu Habib, said the three men were on their way to Buskuwa when they were allegedly accosted and beaten with sticks.

He explained that the victims sustained injuries of varying degrees during the attack.

The police did not immediately disclose what triggered the initial confrontation or establish the identities of all the youths allegedly involved in the first attack.

However, the situation reportedly took a more serious turn later in the night when a reprisal was launched from the Mabani side.

Habib said one Jumba Adamu was allegedly responsible for mobilising youths from Mabani who subsequently moved towards Buskuwa.

The group allegedly attacked residents of the community with sticks, leading to another round of violence.

“Some residents were assaulted,” the police spokesman said, adding that the reprisal attack resulted in the death of one of the victims, identified as Muhammadu Dare.

Dare was reportedly killed at the scene, while other people suffered injuries during the confrontation.

The development prompted an immediate security response as operatives of the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters moved to the affected area.

The police were supported by local hunters and vigilantes, who joined the operation aimed at restoring calm and preventing the confrontation from spreading.

The combined security team subsequently evacuated those who had sustained injuries, as well as the body of the deceased, to General Hospital, Gamawa.

The victims were taken to the hospital for medical attention, while the corpse was presented for postmortem examination.

Habib said the medical personnel at the hospital later confirmed Dare’s death.

“The attending medical doctor certified the deceased dead,” he stated.

The police spokesman further disclosed that three of the injured victims remained at the hospital after being admitted for treatment.

Another three victims, who sustained injuries but did not require continued admission, were treated and subsequently discharged.

The command also announced that one suspect believed to have a connection with the violence had been arrested.

However, the police said the arrest did not mark the end of the investigation, as efforts were still being made to establish the full circumstances surrounding the clash and identify other persons suspected to have participated.

Investigators are expected to examine the events leading to the initial assault on the three Mabani youths, as well as the subsequent reprisal that resulted in Dare’s death.

The police said their preliminary investigation had already commenced.

Habib explained that once the initial stage of the investigation was concluded, the case file would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for a more detailed investigation.

“Preliminary investigation has commenced, and upon conclusion, the case file will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for discreet investigation and prosecution,” he said.

The latest confrontation highlights the danger that can arise when disputes between individuals or groups develop into communal violence.

An attack involving a few individuals can quickly trigger retaliation, potentially drawing more residents into the conflict and increasing the risk of injuries, destruction and loss of life.

In this case, the police said the violence moved from an alleged attack on three youths to a reprisal involving residents of the two communities.

The command’s intervention, supported by hunters and vigilantes, was aimed at bringing the situation under control before further escalation.

Authorities are continuing efforts to track down other individuals who may have been involved in the attacks.

The police are also expected to rely on information gathered during the preliminary investigation to determine the appropriate charges against suspects who are eventually identified.

For residents of Buskuwa and Mabani, the immediate concern remains the restoration of peace and prevention of another confrontation.

The police command has not indicated that the matter has been fully resolved, but the deployment of its operatives and the ongoing investigation are expected to help stabilise the affected communities.

The arrest already made by the police could also assist investigators in establishing how the confrontation developed and identifying other persons allegedly involved.

Meanwhile, residents have been urged to avoid actions that could further inflame tensions while security authorities continue their investigation.

The police said anyone found to have participated in the violence would face prosecution after investigations are completed.

The command’s position is that the matter will be handled through due process, with the SCID expected to take over the case for discreet investigation once the preliminary inquiry by the Gamawa Division is concluded.

As the investigation continues, the focus will now be on identifying all those involved, determining their individual roles and ensuring that the death, injuries and circumstances surrounding the confrontation are properly investigated.

The incident has left one person dead and several others injured, while at least one suspect is already in police custody.

Further arrests could follow as investigators work to establish the complete sequence of events that led to the violence between youths from Buskuwa and Mabani.
