As preparations gradually gather pace ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has delivered a strong message to political stakeholders, urging them to avoid exploiting religion as a campaign tool.
Speaking during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration at his residence in Bodija, Ibadan, the revered monarch stressed that Nigeria must move beyond divisive politics rooted in religious sentiments.
According to the Olubadan, the country’s democratic journey has matured to a point where voters are more interested in competence, inclusiveness, and development rather than religious identity.
The Olubadan noted that in today’s political climate, people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds collaborate seamlessly in workplaces, governance, and community development.
He maintained that introducing religion into political contests only creates unnecessary tension and distracts from the real issues affecting citizens.
He explained that politics should be about service delivery and leadership capacity, not about exploiting faith-based differences.
The Olubadan added that unity remains critical as Nigeria approaches another election cycle, warning that any attempt to polarise the electorate along religious lines could undermine national cohesion.
Beyond politics, the Olubadan also addressed concerns over security in parts of Oyo State, particularly the rising reports of kidnapping and related crimes.
While acknowledging that these incidents have caused anxiety among residents, he assured the public that the situation is being handled with increasing effectiveness by security agencies.
According to the Olubadan, many of the reported kidnapping cases are not part of a coordinated insurgency but are criminal acts largely motivated by financial extortion.
He emphasised that distinguishing between organised terrorism and opportunistic crime is important in understanding the evolving security landscape.
To illustrate progress, the Olubadan referenced a recent incident along the Oluyole axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where security operatives successfully intervened.
He disclosed that three suspects connected to the case were arrested, while two victims were rescued unharmed.
This, he said, demonstrates that law enforcement agencies are not only responsive but are also making tangible progress in curbing criminal activities.
Despite these gains, the Olubadan urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by sharing timely information.
He emphasised that community participation is a vital component of effective security management, especially in urban centres like Ibadan.
Interestingly, the Olubadan identified land grabbing as a more pressing and potentially damaging issue confronting Ibadanland.
He warned that the menace poses a serious threat to economic stability and investor confidence in the region.
The Olubadan described land grabbing as a situation where individuals unlawfully take over landed property, often leading to disputes, financial losses, and prolonged legal battles.
He expressed concern that such practices could discourage both local and foreign investors from committing resources to the city.
According to him, cases abound where rightful landowners return to their property only to discover that it has been illegally occupied or sold.
The Olubadan stressed that if left unchecked, this trend could significantly hinder Ibadan’s growth and urban development.
In response, the Olubadan assured that traditional institutions are not passive observers but are actively collaborating with government authorities to address the problem.
Measures being implemented include sensitisation campaigns to educate residents on land ownership rights and the dangers of illegal acquisitions.
He also highlighted efforts to strengthen local vigilance groups and revive community-based security structures that have historically helped maintain order.
The Olubadan noted that Ibadan’s traditional governance system remains a powerful tool in resolving disputes and enforcing communal norms.
Furthermore, the Olubadan emphasised the importance of restoring discipline and accountability within local communities.
He said that by reinforcing traditional values and working closely with formal security agencies, Ibadan can effectively tackle both criminal activities and socio-economic challenges.
