Nigerian troops have recorded fresh successes in ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-kidnapping operations across the country, rescuing nine kidnapped victims, intercepting 44 family members of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists and arresting several suspected criminals and collaborators.
The operations, conducted in parts of Borno, Zamfara, Benue, Niger, Edo and other areas, also resulted in the recovery of assault rifles, ammunition, mobile phones, cash and other items linked to terrorist and criminal activities.
The latest developments were contained in an operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), detailing a series of military engagements carried out by troops operating under different formations and operational commands.
One of the significant developments occurred in Zamfara State, where troops of 1 Brigade rescued five people who had been held captive by suspected terrorists.
Among those rescued was the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area.
The victims were located at a suspected terrorist camp near Sekpore village in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area after troops established strategic blocking positions around Sekpore and Sabon Gari.
According to the military report, the captives had recently been moved from the Abaniyawa terrorist camp as military pressure increased on the criminal group.
The operation also provided an opportunity for some other victims to escape from captivity.
After the rescue, one of the victims was reunited with his family. The remaining four victims were evacuated to the 1 Brigade Medical Centre, where they were taken for medical attention and further assessment.
A separate intervention by troops of Counter-Terrorism 4 along the Gusau-Sokoto road also resulted in the rescue of four civilians.
The troops responded after terrorists reportedly attacked a vehicle travelling along the road. The soldiers engaged the attackers, forcing them to abandon the scene and retreat into nearby bushes.
The four occupants of the vehicle were subsequently rescued by the troops.
In Borno State, military personnel recorded another significant development involving individuals linked to ISWAP.
Troops of 222 Battalion intercepted 43 persons described in the operational report as family members of ISWAP terrorists at Kawuri in Konduga Local Government Area.
Initial investigations reportedly indicated that the group had escaped from terrorist captivity in Yuwe following clashes between members of the JAS and ISWAP factions.
The intercepted individuals were subsequently handed over to the 7 Multinational Intervention Brigade for further action.
Also in Borno, troops of 192 Battalion intercepted another female individual identified as an ISWAP terrorist family member along the Gwoza-Limankara road in Gwoza Local Government Area.
Preliminary investigations reportedly showed that she had escaped from a terrorist enclave in Chikide, an area situated around the Mandara Mountains.
The development adds to a series of military operations aimed at disrupting terrorist movements and limiting the ability of armed groups to maintain camps and networks in communities affected by insecurity.
Security forces also made arrests and recovered weapons during operations in other parts of Borno State.
Troops of 149 Battalion, supported by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, arrested a suspected kidnapper in Gubio town.
The military said the suspect subsequently assisted troops in locating another area of interest at Ardimini village.
During the follow-up operation, troops recovered an AK-47 magazine containing 12 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
Another operation at Geidam market led to the arrest of a suspected terrorist collaborator.
Troops of 159 Task Force Battalion, working alongside Nigerian Forest Guards, apprehended the suspect and recovered a mobile phone and N296,000.
The arrests form part of broader efforts to identify individuals suspected of providing support, resources or other forms of assistance to terrorist networks operating in the region.
In Niger State, troops operating under Operation Savannah Shield targeted a suspected terrorist camp at Alogomo in Edu Local Government Area.
The suspected terrorists reportedly fled before the troops reached the location.
Despite the absence of the suspects, troops recovered an AK-47 magazine containing eight rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
The military subsequently destroyed the camp to prevent it from being used again as a hideout or operational base by criminal elements.
Benue State also witnessed arrests during operations by troops of Operation Whirl Stroke.
Two suspected kidnappers were arrested along the Otukpo-Makurdi road. The troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, 25 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and a motorcycle from the suspects.
In a separate operation at Adikpo in Kwande Local Government Area, troops arrested a suspected gunrunner.
Two individuals accused of impersonation were also arrested in Benue and Taraba states during related security operations.
The military operations extended beyond terrorism and kidnapping, with troops also supporting efforts against illicit drug cultivation.
In Edo State, soldiers working with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) carried out an operation targeting illegal cannabis farms in Esan South-East Local Government Area.
The joint operation resulted in the destruction of two cannabis cultivation sites identified as Oke Camp and Eko Camp 1 and 2.
Four suspects were arrested during the operation, while fresh and dried cannabis were recovered from the locations.
The suspects and the seized exhibits were subsequently handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and other necessary legal action.
The series of operations reflects the continued deployment of military personnel and other security agencies against terrorism, kidnapping, arms trafficking, criminal collaboration and illegal drug activities in different parts of the country.
While the operations resulted in the rescue of civilians and recovery of weapons, the military report did not provide further details on the identities or current status of all the suspects and individuals intercepted.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the various cases, particularly those involving suspected terrorists, kidnappers, collaborators and gunrunners, as security agencies work to disrupt criminal networks and prevent their activities from spreading to additional communities.
