Nigerian equity market plunges N220bn amid severe sectoral downturn

The Nigerian equity market opened the week on a bearish note as weak investor sentiment weighed heavily on key sectors, leading to a staggering N220 billion loss on Monday.

The downturn was largely driven by declines in the consumer and industrial goods sectors, with Nigerian Breweries and other blue-chip stocks pulling the market lower.

At the close of trading, the Nigerian equity market saw its total market capitalization drop to N89.5 trillion from N89.72 trillion recorded on Friday.

The All-Share Index (ASI) similarly fell by 347.12 points, or 0.24 percent, to close at 141,498.20. Despite this weekly setback of 0.11 percent, the market had maintained a four-week gain of 0.35 percent and an impressive year-to-date growth of 37.48 percent.

Trading volumes showed a modest improvement, reflecting heightened investor activity despite overall market weakness.

A total of 488.5 million shares valued at N13.71 billion changed hands across 28,598 deals.

This marked a 13 percent increase in traded volume, a two percent increase in turnover, and an 18 percent rise in the number of deals compared with the previous session.

Of the 125 listed equities that participated in trading, 22 emerged as gainers while 28 recorded losses.

Royal Exchange led the gainers with a remarkable 9.8 percent increase to close at N2.24 per share, followed by Secure Electronic Technology, which rose 6.67 percent to N0.80.

Chams gained 6.13 percent to N3.29, Prestige Assurance appreciated 5.75 percent to N1.84, and Daar Communications added 5.66 percent, closing at N1.12 per share.

On the losing side, McNichols recorded the largest decline with a 10 percent drop to N3.33 per share. Ikeja Hotel followed closely with a 9.8 percent loss, closing at N20.70, while FTN Cocoa Processors fell 8.33 percent to N5.50.

Nigerian Breweries declined 7.64 percent to N70.15, and Honeywell Flour Mills shed 6.79 percent to close at N20.60 per share.

In terms of trading volume, Universal Insurance led with 79.6 million shares exchanged, followed by Zenith Bank with 58.6 million shares.

Nigerian Breweries and United Bank for Africa (UBA) traded 32.5 million and 32 million shares, respectively.

Zenith Bank dominated the value of trades with N3.86 billion, while Nigerian Breweries accounted for N2.4 billion, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) N1.74 billion, UBA N1.38 billion, and MTN Nigeria N277.6 million.

Sectoral performance on Monday displayed mixed outcomes.

The Premium Index saw a modest gain of 0.02 percent, and the NGX Industrial Index remained largely flat.

However, other critical sectors experienced declines: the Insurance Index dropped 0.08 percent, the NGX Banking Index fell 0.25 percent, and the Main Board Index contracted by 0.39 percent.

Analysts suggest that these sectoral weaknesses continue to affect the broader Nigerian equity market, highlighting the sensitivity of investors to corporate earnings and macroeconomic conditions.

Experts note that the recent sell-off in the Nigerian equity market underscores the need for strategic interventions to bolster investor confidence.

The declines in blue-chip stocks like Nigerian Breweries have ripple effects across the market, influencing both domestic and foreign investment appetite.

Despite the losses, market observers remain optimistic that improving corporate earnings reports and policy measures could restore stability in the coming weeks.

Market strategists emphasize that while the Monday setback was significant, the resilience of the Nigerian equity market is evident from its year-to-date growth.

Sustained participation by institutional investors, alongside active trading by retail investors, is expected to provide support to key market indices.

Furthermore, diversification into defensive sectors and increased foreign portfolio inflows may cushion the market against sudden downturns.

In conclusion, Monday’s performance serves as a reminder of the volatility inherent in the Nigerian equity market.

With mixed sectoral performance and selective gains among equities, investors are advised to remain cautious yet opportunistic, identifying stocks with strong fundamentals and growth potential.

Analysts also highlight that the market’s long-term outlook remains positive, provided that macroeconomic stability, sound corporate governance, and policy consistency are maintained.
