The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has expressed deep outrage over the tragic deaths of two Nigerian nationals in South Africa.
The victims, Mr. Austin Amarachukwu from Imo State and Mr. Owolabi Ayotunde from Lagos State, were reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, on Thursday, July 9.
Reports indicate that around 8 p.m., three masked gunmen stormed Austin’s office. Upon gaining entry, they encountered both victims and immediately shot them at close range.
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, NICASA President, Mr. Frank Onyekwelu, condemned the killings, describing them as a grave and inexcusable act of violence. He called for urgent and coordinated action by both the South African and Nigerian governments to ensure justice is served.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the cold-blooded murder of Mr. Amarachukwu and Mr. Ayotunde. NICASA condemns this barbaric act in the strongest possible terms,” the statement read.
“We demand a thorough and transparent investigation into this heinous crime and insist that those responsible be swiftly apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
NICASA emphasized that such acts of violence must not go unpunished, asserting that the lives of the victims mattered and that their families deserved both justice and closure. The association stressed the importance of sending a strong message that such atrocities will not be tolerated.
The statement further revealed that the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate in South Africa are already engaging with local law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities.
Their efforts are focused on monitoring the investigation, supporting the bereaved families, and ensuring that the case is diligently pursued to its conclusion.
“Our diplomatic missions are working closely with the authorities to guarantee that justice is served,” Mr. Onyekwelu added.
“NICASA, through our KwaZulu-Natal chapter, will continue to monitor the police investigation and maintain active communication with stakeholders involved in the case.”
The NICASA President called on the Nigerian community in South Africa and beyond to unite in demanding justice and promoting the safety and dignity of all Nigerian citizens abroad. He also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
“May the souls of Austin Amarachukwu and Owolabi Ayotunde rest in peace,” Onyekwelu stated. “May their memories inspire us to advocate even more vigorously for justice, unity, and the protection of our people in the diaspora. NICASA remains committed to promoting peace, safeguarding the rights of Nigerians, and enhancing the well-being of our community members in South Africa.”
