The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old housewife, Aisha Musa, over an alleged attempt to poison her husband at Gwamma Village in Bauchi Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, according to the police, happened on August 12, 2026, only about 40 days after the suspect and her husband reportedly got married.
The Command said the case was brought to the attention of the police after a woman residing in the Wunti Dada area of Bauchi raised an alarm and contacted the authorities over the alleged poisoning incident.
Following the distress call, officers from the ‘C’ Division, Tafawa Balewa Estate, were quickly mobilised to the reported location to ascertain what had happened and provide assistance to the victim.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, the Command said the suspect allegedly introduced a poisonous substance into her husband’s meal.
The police explained that officers who arrived at the scene found the victim in need of urgent medical attention. He was immediately evacuated and taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, where he was admitted for treatment.
The Command said the victim remained under medical care and was in stable condition as of the time of its statement.
Meanwhile, police operatives arrested Musa in connection with the alleged poisoning attempt and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly made a confessional statement during interrogation, in which she admitted to the offence. However, the allegation remains subject to further investigation and possible judicial determination.
As part of the investigation, officers reportedly recovered an empty bottle suspected to have contained the poisonous substance. Portions of the food allegedly consumed by the victim were also recovered.
The police said the recovered items had been taken into custody and documented as exhibits as investigators work to establish what exactly happened and determine the substance allegedly used.
The development has prompted the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to order the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID.
The CP directed detectives at the SCID to conduct a discreet and comprehensive investigation into the matter, including examining the circumstances that led to the alleged poisoning and the evidence recovered from the scene.
The police said the decision to transfer the case was aimed at ensuring that all aspects of the incident were properly investigated before any further legal action is taken.
The Command further stated that the suspect would be arraigned before a court once the investigation is concluded.
The alleged incident has drawn attention because of the short period the couple had spent together as husband and wife. Police, however, did not disclose what may have led to the alleged act or whether there had been any disagreement between the couple before the incident.
Authorities have also not released details of the substance allegedly used, as investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
The Bauchi Police Command used the development to remind residents of the importance of promptly reporting emergencies and suspicious activities to security agencies.
The Command said it remained committed to protecting residents, preventing crime and ensuring that individuals suspected of violating the law are subjected to due process.
It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing useful information that could help prevent criminal activities and protect lives.
The case is expected to remain under investigation as detectives work to gather further evidence and establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged poisoning attempt.
Until the matter is determined by a competent court, the suspect remains only an accused person and is presumed innocent under the law.
