Macron warns European leaders of potential US betrayal on Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron has reportedly cautioned European leaders that the United States might betray Ukraine in matters concerning territorial security and unclear guarantees.

According to Der Spiegel, Macron highlighted the dangers posed to Ukraine if European nations rely on ambiguous US commitments, citing a recently leaked summary of a call.

The magazine claimed to have obtained an English-language note containing direct quotes from participants, suggesting Macron described the tense discussions as “a big danger” for President Zelenskyy.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reportedly added that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who also participated in the call, needed to exercise extreme caution in dealings with foreign powers.

Merz allegedly stated, “They are playing games with both you and us,” a phrase interpreted as a reference to US intermediary missions, including Steve Witkoff’s diplomatic visit to Moscow.

Leaders from other European nations reportedly voiced similar concerns. Finland’s Alexander Stubb emphasized the necessity of not leaving Ukraine and its president vulnerable to manipulation by external actors.

Even NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, known for public praise of former US President Trump, reportedly agreed with Stubb, highlighting the importance of protecting Zelenskyy amidst international uncertainty.

Der Spiegel cautioned that there is no easy method to independently verify the note’s authenticity. The Guardian has not been able to immediately confirm the report.

The magazine, however, reported speaking with “several” participants of the call, with two confirming that the quotes were accurately reproduced from the leaked summary.

Responses from key figures remain limited. Zelenskyy’s spokesperson declined comment, as did Chancellor Merz’s office. Meanwhile, the Élysée Palace contested the accuracy of quotes attributed to Macron.

Macron’s warning underscores the growing tension in Europe over Ukraine’s security and the potential unreliability of US commitments in ongoing territorial negotiations.

European leaders continue to weigh their positions carefully, balancing support for Ukraine while managing diplomatic relations with the United States and other international actors.

The call and its leaked notes shed light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics shaping European policy toward Ukraine, revealing the complexities of multilateral diplomacy.

Concerns about potential US betrayal reflect broader European skepticism regarding foreign interventions and the need for clear, enforceable security guarantees for Ukraine.

The full report from Der Spiegel provides extensive details, including original English translations of the leaked notes and quotes from multiple European leaders.

The situation highlights the fragile state of international trust, where even longstanding allies may harbor doubts about the intentions and reliability of major powers.

Discussions over Ukraine’s security are expected to continue at both the European and NATO levels, with careful attention to diplomatic signals from Washington.

As European leaders navigate these challenges, Macron’s warning serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and strategic foresight in international negotiations.

The leaked call also illustrates the high stakes involved for Ukraine, whose leadership faces potential risks in relying on external powers for security assurances.

While the authenticity of the notes remains debated, the content emphasizes the intense diplomatic pressure on European nations to safeguard Ukraine’s interests amid global uncertainty.

The ongoing dialogue between France, Germany, Finland, and other European countries underscores the collective concern over Ukraine’s sovereignty and the broader security landscape.

Macron’s message, as reported, indicates that Europe must prepare for scenarios where US support may be inconsistent or contingent, necessitating independent strategies for Ukrainian protection.

The developments further reinforce the need for transparent, reliable communication among allies to prevent misunderstandings or miscalculations in high-stakes geopolitical situations.

European nations remain committed to supporting Ukraine, but Macron’s cautionary note serves as a warning that reliance on external guarantees carries inherent risks.
