Human rights activist and pro-democracy advocate, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the legacy of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away today at the age of 82.
Sowore’s sharp criticism stands in contrast to the outpouring of tributes from many political figures who have chosen to celebrate Buhari’s leadership and record in office.
The family of the late president confirmed his death in a statement, disclosing that he died this afternoon at a private clinic in London, United Kingdom, where he had been receiving treatment.
Buhari had battled a prolonged illness, although the specific details of his health condition were never officially made public throughout his years of visible frailty and recurring medical trips abroad.
Born on December 17, 1942, Muhammadu Buhari was a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army. He first emerged on Nigeria’s national stage as the country’s military Head of State, after toppling a civilian government in a coup on December 31, 1983. His military regime lasted until August 27, 1985, when he was overthrown by another military faction.
Three decades later, Buhari returned to national power through democratic elections, winning the presidency in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second term in 2023.
His presidency was marked by polarizing assessments — while some praised his anti-corruption campaign, others condemned his administration’s record on human rights, economic management, and national security.
In his reaction to the announcement of Buhari’s death, Sowore alleged that the former president died of blood cancer, specifically leukemia, citing insider sources. He further revealed that Buhari had undergone stem cell therapy in the UK during the early stages of his illness.
Sowore said: “Former Nigerian President and ex-military dictator, Muhammadu Buhari, has reportedly died in a UK clinic. Sources indicate the cause of death was blood cancer (leukemia). Buhari had stem cell therapy when he first became ill.
“His rule, whether as a military head or as a civilian president, inflicted deep wounds on Nigeria’s democracy. His legacy is one of repression, economic misery, insecurity, and religious bigotry.
Throughout his treatment, Nigeria was incurring a daily medical expense of £3,000 for his care in the UK until his death today.”
Sowore’s remarks have reignited public debates about Buhari’s contentious legacy, with many Nigerians reflecting on his impact on the nation’s democratic journey, economy, and social cohesion.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner produced a masterclass on Centre Court to dismantle Novak Djokovic in straight sets and book a place in his first Wimbledon final, where he will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
The 23-year-old Italian overpowered the seven-time Wimbledon champion 6–3, 6–3, 6–4 in a stunning semifinal performance that ended Djokovic’s bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title. It also marked Sinner’s sixth consecutive win over the Serb—his first on grass—and avenged past defeats at SW19.
The result sets up a blockbuster rematch of last month’s French Open final, where Alcaraz came from two sets down to edge Sinner in five thrilling sets. This time, Sinner hopes to reverse the script.
First Sinner-Alcaraz Wimbledon final
“It’s a huge honour for me to share the court again with Carlos,” Sinner said after the match. “Hopefully it will be another great match like the last one. I don’t know if we can top it, but we’ll try. Hopefully, it’ll be enjoyable for everyone.”
Alcaraz Awaits as Rivalry Heats Up
World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz booked his spot in Sunday’s final earlier on Friday, defeating American fifth seed Taylor Fritz 6–4, 5–7, 6–3, 7–6 (8–6) in the day’s first semi-final. The pair now set up a mouthwatering showdown, continuing a remarkable streak where either Sinner or Alcaraz has appeared in each of the last six Grand Slam finals.
20 Wimbledon wins in a row for Alcaraz
While Alcaraz seeks a third Wimbledon crown, Sinner will aim for his first major title on grass and his second Grand Slam this year, following his Australian Open triumph earlier this year.
Djokovic’s Future Uncertain After Defeat
For 38-year-old Novak Djokovic, the defeat was a bitter blow—and may be the clearest signal yet that time is catching up with the tennis legend. This was widely seen as his best chance to win a record-breaking 25th major, on his favourite surface where he has been near-invincible over the past decade.
Djokovic, who eliminated Sinner in both 2022 and 2023 at Wimbledon, was largely outclassed this time around. The Serb managed just six break points all match, converting only one, and required a medical timeout after the second set, possibly due to lingering effects of a slip in his quarterfinal against Flavio Cobolli.
Sinner, by contrast, looked sharp and composed throughout, with no visible signs of discomfort from the elbow injury that troubled him earlier in the tournament.
Sinner becomes the second player after Carlos Alcaraz to beat Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon since 2018
How the Match Unfolded
The opening set raced by as Sinner, serving impeccably, grabbed an early break and never looked back. He dictated from the baseline, chased down drop shots, and consistently outmaneuvered Djokovic in rallies.
In the second set, Sinner once again struck early, and although Centre Court rallied behind Djokovic, the Serb could find no way through Sinner’s consistent serve—failing to create a single break point in the first two sets.
Djokovic’s brief resurgence came in the third when he broke Sinner’s serve to take a 4–2 lead. But the Italian responded with a five-game streak, saving two break points and breaking back with a coolness that belied his age and experience.
Djokovic saved two match points to force Sinner to serve it out, but the Italian held firm on his second opportunity, sending a deafening signal that a new era in men’s tennis is fully underway.

A Gracious Exit for the Champion
Centre Court gives Djokovic massive ovation
As Djokovic left the court, the crowd gave him a prolonged ovation, and he responded with a wave to all four corners of Centre Court—leaving many to wonder just how many more times they will witness the great Serb at this stage of Wimbledon.
His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, The Olubadan of Ibadanland
The monarch, who was installed as the 43rd Olubadan, departed this world in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after commemorating his 90th birthday.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin ascended the prestigious throne of his forefathers in July 2024, following the passing of his predecessor, Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II.
The late Oba Balogun died on March 14, 2024, at the age of 81, paving the way for Oba Olakulehin’s ascension through the traditional succession hierarchy.
His emergence was in accordance with the city’s well-structured and rotational succession tradition, which ensures a peaceful and dignified transfer of leadership.
Oba Olakulehin officially received his staff of office from the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, during a grand installation ceremony that drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, and well-wishers from across Nigeria.
Though his reign lasted only one year, Oba Olakulehin will be remembered for his calm leadership, wisdom, and commitment to the unity and progress of Ibadanland. His brief tenure was marked by efforts to preserve cultural heritage, promote peaceful coexistence, and foster community development.
His passing has thrown the entire Ibadan traditional council and the people of Oyo State into mourning, as tributes pour in for a monarch whose life was steeped in service, tradition, and dignity.
World champions Spain made a powerful statement in their opening match of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, thrashing Portugal 5-0 in a commanding display in Bern, Switzerland.
The encounter was played in a sombre atmosphere, with both teams and fans paying tribute to Portuguese international Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash earlier on Thursday. A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off, while fans held up pictures and shirts bearing Jota’s name, and a large image of him in a Portugal shirt was displayed on the stadium’s big screen.
Despite the emotional weight of the occasion, Spain were relentless from the outset. Having already beaten Portugal 4-2 and 7-1 in the Nations League earlier this year, they were firm favourites — and needed just 88 seconds to assert their dominance.
Olga Carmona delivered a deep pass from the left, which Esther González brilliantly controlled on her shoulder before flicking a volley past Ines Pereira. Six minutes later, 18-year-old Vicky López doubled the lead, sliding in Arsenal winger Mariona Caldentey’s low cross.
Spain continued to pile on the pressure. A superb diagonal ball from Caldentey set up Alexia Putellas for the third, as the two-time Ballon d’Or winner skipped inside a challenge and calmly finished. González added her second and Spain’s fourth before half-time, reacting quickest to tap in the rebound after Claudia Pina’s cross struck the post.
Substitute Cristina Martín-Prieto completed the rout in stoppage time with a bullet header from a Salma Paralluelo cross.
A Historic Campaign Begins
Spain are aiming to become only the third nation to win both the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the UEFA Women’s Championship — a feat previously achieved by Germany and Norway. Remarkably, Spain have never won the European Championship, with their best finish being a semi-final appearance in 1997.
This performance, however, firmly established them as tournament favourites, showcasing the depth and quality of their squad. Notably, Barcelona star Salma Paralluelo, who has finished third in Ballon d’Or voting for two consecutive years, started on the bench. Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, recovering from a recent bout of viral meningitis, was also among the substitutes and made a brief appearance in the 80th minute.
Standout Performers
Teenage sensation Vicky López was one of Spain’s brightest sparks, terrorising the Portuguese defence throughout. She not only scored Spain’s second goal but also completed five successful dribbles, created three chances, and had an 88.5% pass accuracy. López led all players with nine touches in the opposition box and combined seamlessly with Barcelona teammates Putellas and Pina.
Key Stats
Portugal remain without a win in their opening match at a major tournament (Women’s Euros or World Cup). Spain became the fourth team to score four or more goals in the first half of a Women’s Euro match, joining Norway (2005), France (2022), and England (2022). Spain’s 5-0 win is now their biggest victory in the finals of a European Championship, surpassing their 4-1 triumph over Finland at Euro 2022.
What’s Next?
Spain will face Belgium in their second Group B match on Monday, 7 July in Thun (17:00 BST), while Portugal will aim to bounce back against Italy later the same day in Geneva (20:00 BST).
In Thursday’s other Group B clash, Italy edged Belgium 1-0 thanks to a goal from Arianna Caruso, putting them in a strong early position in the group standings.
Spain’s electrifying start signals their intent — and it may take something special to stop them.
The race for 2027 presidency appears to have started in earnest as politician are testing the water and microphone to create awareness and mobilisation.
Loyalists of president Bola Tinubu have started a subtle campaign for his reelection.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Joe Igbokwe, has urged President Bola Tinubu’s opponents to abandon any thought of contesting for the presidency in 2027.Igbokwe said Tinubu would secure a second term and reposition Nigeria for the better.
Joe Igbokwe’s bold declaration comes as the 2027 presidential election is already generating buzz.
Igbokwe’s statement is likely intended to deter potential opponents.
Igbokwe’s warning is not without context, as he highlighted Tinubu’s impressive background, including his time as a senator and governor of Lagos State, as well as his role in forming key political parties.
However, not everyone is convinced, with some critics questioning Tinubu’s performance and suggesting that Igbokwe’s statement is more of a propaganda tactic .
In a bold statement that has ignited discussions across political circles, Joe Igbokwe, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who serves as the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Drainage and Water Resources, asserted that Tinubu’s position is solidified, making it futile for any opposition candidate to enter the race..
To Igbokwe President Tinubu is not just a leader; he is a visionary who has laid down the groundwork for sustainable growth. Contesting against him would be a waste of resources and time.
Igbokwe’s remarks come in the wake of ongoing debates about the political future of Nigeria and the potential candidates who may emerge from various parties. He emphasized that Tinubu’s policies and initiatives resonate with the electorate, making him a formidable candidate for a second term.
The people are beginning to see the positive impacts of his governance. It’s time for the opposition to recognize this reality,” he added.
Critics of Igbokwe’s statement argue that democracy thrives on competition and that the opposition must present alternative visions for the country’s future.
Political analysts are closely monitoring the situation, as Igbokwe’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among Tinubu’s supporters that the president is well-positioned to secure a second term.
The Delta State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on suspected criminal and cult activities following separate operations in Ughelli North and Ethiope East Local Government Areas, during which several firearms and ammunition were recovered and three suspected cult members arrested.
Among the items recovered by the police were an AK-47 rifle, two pump-action guns, two AK-47 magazines, 55 rounds of live ammunition and seven live cartridges.
Other items recovered during the operations included a knife, a cutlass and a mobile phone, according to the command.
The police said the operations were carried out after receiving intelligence on the activities of suspected kidnappers, armed robbers and members of the Black Axe confraternity operating in different locations within the state.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Bright Edafe, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.
He said one of the major operations was conducted by operatives attached to the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team, known as CP-SAT, following information about the activities of suspected kidnappers and armed robbers.
The operation took place at about 9 p.m. on October 4 around Uduere Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
According to the police, the operatives moved into a bush believed to be serving as a hideout for the suspected criminals after receiving a tip-off about the location.
Edafe said the police team came under fire after the suspects noticed the presence of the operatives.
The development reportedly resulted in an exchange of gunfire between the security personnel and the suspected criminals.
The suspects eventually abandoned the location and escaped into the surrounding area after reportedly being unable to withstand the firepower of the police team.
Although the suspects succeeded in fleeing, the police said they left behind weapons and other items that were subsequently recovered by the operatives.
A search of the suspected hideout led to the discovery of an AK-47 rifle alongside two magazines and 55 rounds of live ammunition.
A pump-action gun and seven live cartridges were also recovered from the area. Police operatives further found a knife, a cutlass and a mobile phone at the location.
The command said the recovery had strengthened its efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects who escaped from the scene.
Edafe stated that a manhunt had commenced for the fleeing suspects as the police continued investigations into the activities of the group.
The command recorded another breakthrough in a separate operation carried out in Ethiope East Local Government Area in the early hours of October 5.
According to the police, the operation followed intelligence concerning suspected cult activities in Kokori.
At approximately 12:45 a.m., operatives of the Quick Response Squad moved to a location along Ekrakra Road where suspected members of the Black Axe confraternity were allegedly holding a meeting.
The police said the operatives arrived at the location based on information received about the gathering.
On sighting the police team, the suspected cult members reportedly scattered and fled in different directions in an attempt to evade arrest.
However, the police succeeded in apprehending three of the suspects during the operation.
The command identified those arrested as 33-year-old Uzubu Ufuoma, 27-year-old Solomon Ovie, aged 27, and 31-year-old Remember Emuere.
Following their arrest, the suspects reportedly took the police to another location where an additional firearm was recovered.
Edafe said the three suspects led investigators to an abandoned building at Okodjerhe Village in Kokori.
A search of the building resulted in the recovery of an automatic pump-action gun which the police alleged belonged to the group.
The latest arrests and weapon recoveries come as the Delta State Police Command continues operations aimed at disrupting criminal networks and cult-related activities across the state.
The command said the three suspects remain in police custody while investigations continue.
Police operatives are also working to identify and apprehend other suspected members of the group who escaped during the operation.
Similarly, the suspects who fled from the Ughelli North hideout remain the subject of an ongoing police manhunt.
The police have not disclosed whether the recovered weapons have been linked to any specific attack, kidnapping or robbery incident.
Investigations are expected to establish the identities and activities of the individuals connected with the recovered firearms and ammunition.
The command’s latest operations also highlight the role of intelligence gathering in its efforts to locate suspected criminal hideouts and disrupt planned activities.
While the police have described those arrested and those who escaped as suspected members of criminal or cult groups, the allegations remain subject to investigation.
The Delta State Police Command said its operatives would continue to act on credible intelligence in an effort to prevent criminal activities and apprehend individuals suspected of threatening the safety and security of residents.
Members of the public are also expected to provide relevant information that could assist security agencies in locating wanted suspects and preventing further criminal activities across communities in the state.
Oyo police arrest three suspects over alleged murder and robbery of a family in Lagelu, as investigators recover one victim and search for others.
The Oyo State Police Command has announced the arrest of three suspects allegedly connected to a deadly attack on a family in Oloba Village, Lagelu Local Government Area of Ibadan, where several members of the household were reportedly killed and dumped in a nearby river.
The suspects, identified by the police as Hammed Akinbami, Akinbami Ojo and Padonu Edward, are all said to be residents of Oloba Village.
Their arrest followed intelligence gathered by the Command concerning the violent incident, which reportedly took place on September 22, 2026.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed the development in a statement issued on October 6, 2026.
According to the police, detectives received credible information about the incident on October 2 at approximately 5:00 p.m.
The information prompted an investigation aimed at determining what happened to the family and identifying those allegedly responsible for the attack.
The police said preliminary findings indicated that the suspects allegedly stormed the residence of Ifeanyi Chukwu, his wife and their four children at about 7:00 p.m. on September 22.
The attackers were reportedly armed with a locally manufactured Dane gun, two cutlasses and a club. The weapons were allegedly used to overpower and assault members of the household during the invasion.
The Command said the incident was initially carried out as a robbery, with the assailants allegedly making away with N200,000 in cash and several pieces of equipment belonging to the family.
Items allegedly stolen during the operation included a Boxer motorcycle, a Doma machine equipped with a chainsaw and a spraying machine.
However, what began as a reported robbery allegedly turned into a horrific attack on the family.
Police investigations indicated that Hammed Akinbami allegedly shot the husband during the incident, while Akinbami Ojo and Padonu Edward allegedly attacked the woman, repeatedly hitting her on the head.
The police further alleged that the assailants subjected the children to severe violence. Two of the children were reportedly tied by their hands and legs before being thrown into a nearby river.
The Command said the other members of the family were also allegedly killed and their bodies disposed of in the same river.
Following the discovery of the incident, efforts were launched to recover the victims and gather evidence that could assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Police authorities confirmed that the remains of the woman have been recovered. However, the search for the remains of the other victims was still ongoing as of the time of the statement.
The Command said detectives subsequently visited the scene of the attack as part of the investigation. Photographs were taken at the location, while several exhibits believed to be connected to the crime were recovered.
Among the items recovered were the Boxer motorcycle allegedly belonging to the family, a locally made Dane gun, two cutlasses and a club.
The recovery of the items, according to the police, formed part of the evidence being assembled in the case as investigators worked to establish the roles allegedly played by each of the suspects.
Following their arrest, the three suspects were taken into custody and subjected to interrogation. The police said they subsequently confessed to their alleged involvement in the crime.
The Command did not disclose further details of the suspects’ alleged confessions but said the investigation would continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident and determine whether other persons were involved.
The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, where further investigation and legal action will be undertaken.
The development has again highlighted concerns over violent crimes in rural communities, particularly incidents in which robbery allegedly escalates into attacks on residents.
For the Chukwu family, however, the incident has left a devastating trail, with police still working to recover the remains of those who were allegedly killed and thrown into the river.
The police have also continued to appeal for information that could assist investigators in establishing the complete circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, psc, mnips, has directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated.
The police commissioner, according to the statement, wants all persons found to have participated in the crime to be identified and brought before the appropriate authorities to face the law.
The Command said the suspects would remain subject to the ongoing investigation and subsequent legal proceedings, stressing that the case would be handled through the appropriate judicial process.
Meanwhile, investigators are expected to continue efforts to recover the remains of the other victims while examining the recovered exhibits and other evidence gathered from the scene.
The police said the ongoing investigation is intended not only to establish the immediate circumstances of the attack but also to ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.
As the investigation progresses, the three arrested suspects remain central to the police inquiry into the alleged robbery, murder and disposal of the victims’ bodies at Oloba Village in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The Trump Los AngelesSan Diego remark has triggered a political backlash in California after President Donald Trump said Iran could “take out” the two major cities while discussing the economic costs of the war.
Trump made the comments during a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, as he defended the sacrifices Americans were making because of higher fuel, fertilizer and other prices linked to disruptions caused by the conflict with Iran.
The president argued that the economic costs were a small price to pay for keeping the United States and the world safe, before referring to the possibility of an Iranian attack on a major American city.
Trump says Iran could ‘take out’ US city
Speaking to supporters, Trump said: “It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, for keeping our country safe. They could take out a city. Let ’em take out Los Angeles, let ’em take out San Diego.”
He then said the conflict would end soon, adding that it was “essentially almost over with” and would end “one way or the other.”
The remarks immediately drew attention because Los Angeles and San Diego are the two largest cities in California and both have major strategic and economic importance.
San Diego also has a substantial military presence, with more than 115,000 active-duty service members stationed there, including personnel at Naval Base San Diego.
The comments therefore generated concern among California officials and some Republicans, particularly because they appeared to suggest that an attack on the cities could be tolerated as part of the broader conflict.
White House rejects interpretation of remarks
The White House subsequently rejected criticism that Trump was suggesting Iran should attack American cities.
White House communications director Steven Cheung said Trump was referring to the threat that would exist if Iran were allowed to develop the ability to attack US cities with nuclear weapons.
“The media freakout over President Trump’s comments is not rooted in reality,” Cheung said.
He argued that Trump “was clearly stating U.S. cities would have been threatened if a nuclear Iran hadn’t been stopped.”
The White House also said Iran currently has no nuclear capability, navy, air force or financial strength that would allow it to pose the threat Trump was describing.
The clarification came as the administration faced growing political pressure over the economic consequences of the Iran conflict, particularly rising fuel prices.
Newsom described the president as “deranged and dangerous” and accused him of suggesting that foreign enemies should attack California’s major cities.
“After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego,” Newsom wrote on X.
Newsom has emerged as one of Trump’s most prominent political opponents and has repeatedly clashed with the president over the deployment of federal military personnel in California.
His response also came as early voting began in California for the November midterm elections, adding a political dimension to the controversy.
Trump’s Republican Party is seeking to make gains in California, traditionally one of the country’s strongest Democratic states.
Republican candidate distances himself
The backlash was not limited to Democrats.
Jim Desmond, a Republican congressional candidate in a competitive district near San Diego, publicly rejected Trump’s comments.
“I vehemently disagree with President Trump’s comments,” Desmond said.
He argued that while the United States must confront Iran and defend American interests, the president’s first responsibility is to protect Americans and the homeland.
“No American city is expendable, and no American family should ever be treated as collateral damage,” Desmond said.
His response illustrated the political sensitivity surrounding Trump’s wording, particularly in San Diego, where a large military population could be directly affected by any serious conflict involving the United States and Iran.
Los Angeles mayor warns of safety concerns
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also condemned the president’s comments.
“The president of the United States suggested that a foreign government attack Los Angeles,” Bass said, warning that the remarks were dangerous and could potentially compromise the city’s safety.
Bass’s criticism adds to the growing response from California’s Democratic leadership.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of Trump’s repeated criticism of Democratic-run American cities and his broader arguments about crime, immigration and public order.
The latest comments have therefore become part of an increasingly contentious political relationship between the president and California.
California enters midterm election season
The timing of the controversy is also significant because California’s early voting for the November midterm elections has begun.
Republicans have been seeking to improve their performance in the state, while Democrats have worked to protect their congressional advantage.
Newsom previously backed changes to California’s congressional map designed to favour Democrats after Trump supported a redistricting effort in Texas aimed at strengthening Republicans.
The dispute over Trump’s comments could consequently become part of the broader political debate over the president’s approach to California and the Iran conflict.
Trump defends Iran war costs
Trump’s comments were made while discussing the economic consequences of the war with Iran.
The president has repeatedly attempted to downplay concerns about rising living costs associated with the conflict.
Energy prices have increased amid disruption to global oil supplies, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a major factor in the energy market. Reuters has also reported that Trump’s administration has faced pressure over rising gasoline and diesel prices as the war continues.
Trump has argued that the economic sacrifice is justified by the broader objective of protecting the United States and preventing Iran from developing capabilities that could threaten American cities.
However, the wording of his Nebraska remarks has shifted attention from that argument to whether the president appeared to dismiss the potential loss of American lives.

The White House insists that was not Trump’s meaning.
The clarification has not prevented criticism, with Democrats and at least one Republican arguing that no US city should be presented as an acceptable cost of war.
The Trump Los Angeles San Diego remark has therefore become another flashpoint in the president’s increasingly contentious debate with California, while the White House continues to frame the comments as a warning about what Iran could potentially do if allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
With California already entering the midterm election period and the Iran conflict continuing to affect energy prices, the controversy is likely to remain politically significant as both parties campaign on national security, the economy and the administration’s handling of the war.
Former BCOS union chairman Kayode Olagunju recalls how salary delays forced him into kabukabu and nearly led to him being mistaken for a kidnapper.
Former Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), staff member and former union chairman, Kayode Olagunju, has shared a personal experience from his years at the organisation, recalling how irregular salary payments once forced him to seek alternative means of supporting his family after work.
His experience, he said, remains a painful reminder of the pressures workers can face when their regular income becomes uncertain.
Olagunju’s recollection comes against the backdrop of ongoing concerns surrounding the welfare of BCOS workers and pensioners, including complaints relating to salary delays, deductions and retirement benefits.
His account offers a personal perspective on the human impact of the issues surrounding the state-owned media organisation.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Olagunju recounts how he resorted to operating his private car as a commercial vehicle after work to make ends meet, an experience that eventually saw him mistaken for a kidnapper.
Reflecting on the incident years later, he draws attention to the struggles faced by workers and pensioners and calls for greater focus on the people behind the institution.
Below is the full statement:
I WAS MISTAKEN FOR A KIDNAPPER
Sometimes, when I look at what is happening to some of the staff and pensioners of BCOS today, I remember an experience from years ago that still brings tears to my eyes.
There was a period when salaries were not coming as they should. But whether salary came or not, life continued. My family still needed food. Bills still had to be paid. Children still needed attention. And responsibilities did not wait for the next salary alert.
One day, after closing from work, I picked up my Honda and drove to Iwo Road.
I decided to do kabukabu after work.
I wasn't doing it because I suddenly became a commercial driver. I was simply trying to survive and provide for my family. I would pick passengers from Iwo Road, take them towards Ojoo, drop them and return to look for another passenger before going home.
That was how desperate things could become when a worker had responsibilities but no regular salary to depend on.
Then something frightening happened.
After dropping some passengers, I was stopped.
Before I could properly understand what was happening, I was being mistaken for a kidnapper.
The reason?
I was driving a very neat Honda car with full air conditioning, and apparently, the vehicle looked too big and too sophisticated to be used for kabukabu.
I tried to explain myself, but the situation had already become frightening.
And then my friend Adedeji Kamorudeen Haji Kay came in.
Komo's intervention was what saved me before things could get worse and before I was eventually allowed to go.
I remember that experience vividly.
I had gone out to look for money to feed my family, and I nearly became a victim of suspicion simply because I was trying to survive.
That day, I went home shaken.
I remember crying.
And even after all these years, thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes.
But today, when I look at the situation surrounding some BCOS workers and pensioners, that old experience means something different to me.
Because I understand what it means when a worker has a family depending on him or her and the expected income is uncertain.
Recent reports have highlighted complaints from BCOS workers about delayed salaries, deductions and welfare, while pensioners and veterans have also raised concerns about retirement benefits and the wider condition of the corporation.
They are fathers.
They are mothers.
They are husbands and wives.
They are people paying school fees, house rent, medical bills and feeding their families.
They are workers who have spent years behind microphones, cameras, editing desks, studios, transmitters and administrative offices helping BCOS fulfil its public broadcasting responsibility.
And the pensioners?
Many of them have already given their productive years to the institution.
They should not have to spend their retirement worrying about how to survive.
My experience taught me something very simple:
When a worker is not paid, desperation can push that person into situations nobody ever imagined.
I was lucky.
I had my car.
I had the strength to do kabukabu after work.
And, most importantly, I had a friend like Komo who intervened when I needed help.
But what about the worker who has no car?
What about the mother who has no side hustle?
What about the pensioner who has no strength to start another job?
What about the family waiting at home for someone who has already exhausted every possible means of survival?
That is why the conversation about BCOS should go beyond management, unions, politics and administration.
At the centre of everything should be the human being.
BCOS is not just a building.
It is not just radio frequencies and television signals.
It is not just a government institution.
BCOS is the people who built it, the people currently keeping it alive and the pensioners who gave their best years to it.
I remember being mistaken for a kidnapper simply because I was trying to make a little extra money to feed my family.
Today, when I hear stories of workers struggling with salary and welfare issues, I remember that young man who drove to Iwo Road after work, not to commit a crime, but simply to put food on his family's table.
I survived that day because Komo came to my rescue.
I pray that today's BCOS workers will not have to face situations that force them to choose between their dignity and feeding their families.
And I pray that those who have retired after decades of service will enjoy the dignity they deserve.
Behind every salary delay is a family waiting. Behind every deduction is a worker's expectation. Behind every pensioner is a lifetime of service.
The Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation says Bala Mohammed’s praise for President Tinubu exposes contradictions in Governor Seyi Makinde’s 2027 presidential ambition.
The Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation has described Governor Seyi Makinde’s presidential ambition under the banner of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) as dead on arrival, saying the latest commendation of President Bola Tinubu by Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, has further exposed the emptiness of the governor’s presidential project.
Governor Mohammed, who is the national leader of APM, publicly acknowledged that President Tinubu has “done so well” in several areas, particularly finance, health and security.
A statement by Bisi Oladele, Director Media and Publicity for Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO), said for the pillar of Makinde’s own political camp to be truthful in publicly acknowledging the achievements of the President spoke louder than all the contrived rhetoric coming from the Makinde presidential campaign.
“The question Nigerians should now ask is simple: if one of the principal promoters of Makinde’s presidential ambition truthfully admits that President Tinubu is doing well, what exactly is the justification for Makinde asking Nigerians to replace the President?
“The contradiction is glaring. Governor Mohammed deserves commendation for having the courage to acknowledge the truth rather than engaging in opposition for opposition’s sake.
“His remarks merely confirm what millions of Nigerians can increasingly see: President Tinubu’s reforms are producing results, strengthening the fiscal position of states and enabling governments at the subnational level to undertake development projects.
“For Governor Makinde, however, the political message could not be clearer. His presidential campaign is collapsing under the weight of its own contradictions before the real contest has even begun.
“We have always maintained that Makinde’s so-called presidential ambition appears less like a serious pathway to Aso Rock and more like a political bargaining chip designed to enhance his negotiating position in the unfolding 2027 political equation,” the SSACO said.
Alli noted that Makinde’s candidacy is increasingly becoming clearer as a smokescreen for negotiation, more like an attempt to arrive at the political bargaining table claiming a national following that simply does not exist.
“How does a candidate seriously expect Nigerians to believe he can defeat an incumbent president when prominent leaders within his own political family are publicly applauding that President’s performance?
“Even more instructive is the fact that Governor Mohammed had previously endorsed Makinde and described him as the leader Nigeria needed.
“His latest acknowledgement of President Tinubu’s performance therefore raises legitimate political questions about the cohesion, conviction and sustainability of the so-called coalition behind Makinde.
“Makinde may continue to erect billboards, commission campaign offices and make grandiose declarations about “resetting” Nigeria, but politics is ultimately about structures, numbers, credibility and alliances.
“A presidential candidate whose own political allies are validating the achievements of the incumbent has a serious credibility problem,” the campaign organisation said.
The Alli Campaign Organisation, therefore, advises Governor Makinde to concentrate on accounting for his stewardship in Oyo State and preparing for the transition of power in 2027 rather than using an improbable presidential project to distract the people from the issues confronting his administration.
“The people of Oyo State are more interested in his legacy —the state’s debt profile, the condition of the local economy, infrastructure, education, healthcare and the welfare of workers—than in a presidential adventure whose political foundations are already crumbling.
“Governor Makinde is free to aspire to the highest office in the land. That is his constitutional right. But he should not mistake ambition for viability, publicity for popularity or political bargaining for a genuine national movement,” the statement added.
Oyo EPLF urges citizens to actively participate in the 2027 elections and calls for issue-based campaigns focused on policies, accountability and good governance.
The Emerging Political Leaders Forum (EPLF), Oyo State, has called for greater citizen participation in the 2027 general elections, urging residents to take a more informed and active role in shaping the state’s political future.
The group said the forthcoming elections should be driven by meaningful discussions on policies, governance and issues affecting the people, rather than personal attacks, misinformation and divisive rhetoric among political actors.
The Forum made the call in a statement issued by its Pro-tem Coordinator, Hon. Faysol Oluwakemi, where it also urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to embrace peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 polls.

PRESS RELEASE
Oyo EPLF Calls for Active Citizen Participation in 2027 Elections, Advocates Issue-Based Campaigns
The Emerging Political Leaders Forum (EPLF), Oyo State, has called on citizens across the state to take an active and informed interest in the 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of responsible participation in the democratic process.
The Forum also urged political parties, candidates and political actors to make issue-based campaigns a central feature of the 2027 electoral process, rather than allowing campaigns to be dominated by personal attacks, misinformation, ethnic sentiments or unnecessary political hostility.
In a statement issued by the Pro-tem Coordinator of Oyo EPLF, Hon. Faysol Oluwakemi, the Forum said elections should provide citizens with the opportunity to critically examine the ideas, programmes, records and commitments of those seeking public office.
According to the Forum, political participation should go beyond voting on election day. Citizens should take an interest in political developments, ask questions, examine candidates and their proposals, participate peacefully in the democratic process and hold elected representatives accountable after elections.
The Oyo EPLF further called on candidates and political parties to engage the electorate on issues that directly affect the lives of citizens, including education, healthcare, employment, security, infrastructure, economic opportunities, youth development and good governance.
“The quality of our democracy is influenced not only by those who seek public office, but also by the level of participation and responsibility demonstrated by citizens. The 2027 elections should be an opportunity for Nigerians to engage with ideas, policies and programmes and make informed choices,” the statement said.
The Forum emphasised that its position is not in support of any political party or candidate, noting that the Emerging Political Leaders Forum is a non-partisan platform that provides space for emerging leaders across political affiliations to engage, learn, exchange ideas and contribute to the development of Nigeria's democratic system.
Oyo EPLF also encouraged political candidates to conduct their campaigns with respect for opponents and voters, while urging supporters to reject violence, hate speech, misinformation and other forms of conduct capable of undermining peaceful elections.
The Forum believes that political leadership should be approached as a responsibility to serve the people and not merely as a contest for power.
As the 2027 elections approach, the Oyo EPLF called on all stakeholders, particularly young and emerging political leaders, to contribute positively to the democratic process and promote a political culture where competence, ideas, accountability and service to the people receive meaningful attention.

Hon. Faysol Oluwakemi Pro-tem Coordinator, Emerging Political Leaders Forum (EPLF), Oyo State.
Flávio, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, won about 47% of the vote against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s 45%, sending the two candidates into a runoff scheduled for October 25.
The result was accompanied by significant gains for Bolsonaro-aligned candidates in congressional and other elections, strengthening the political network built around the former president.
Flávio Bolsonaro leads presidential race
Flávio Bolsonaro’s first-round performance exceeded expectations and placed him ahead of Lula going into the second round.
The Liberal Party, which backs Bolsonaro, also emerged as the largest force in Brazil’s next Congress. Reuters reported that the party increased its Senate representation from 15 to 28 seats and was projected to hold 121 seats in the lower house, compared with 98 previously.
The congressional result could have important implications for the next president because legislative support would influence the ability of any administration to pass major policies.
For Flávio, the result also provides a stronger political platform as he attempts to consolidate support ahead of the October 25 runoff.
Lula, meanwhile, faces the task of expanding his support beyond his traditional base after narrowly finishing behind his rival in the first round.
Four Bolsonaro family members elected
The presidential result was only one part of the Bolsonaro family’s electoral success.
Michelle Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro’s wife and Brazil’s former first lady, was elected to the Senate in her first campaign for public office.
Her victory strengthens the position of one of the family’s most popular political figures and gives her a national elected platform independent of her husband’s previous presidency.
Jair Bolsonaro’s second son, Carlos Bolsonaro, was also elected senator after spending about 25 years as a city councillor in Rio de Janeiro.
Carlos has long been closely associated with his father’s political communication strategy and was involved in managing Jair Bolsonaro’s social media presence.
Jair Renan Bolsonaro, the former president’s fourth son, also secured election to the federal Congress after previously serving as a city councillor.
The family breakthrough extended beyond Jair Bolsonaro’s children.
His younger brother, Renato Bolsonaro, was elected to Congress after previously losing seven consecutive elections for lower-level political offices.
Michelle Bolsonaro emerges as key figure
Michelle Bolsonaro’s victory may be particularly significant because she has developed a political profile of her own within the broader Bolsonaro movement.
The former first lady has strong links with evangelical voters and became known nationally during Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency.
She made history in 2019 when she delivered a speech in Brazilian Sign Language at her husband’s inauguration, reflecting her previous experience as an interpreter at evangelical church services.
A researcher quoted by the Guardian, Camila Rocha of the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning, described Michelle as highly popular among Bolsonaro supporters.
“She is a phenomenon,” Rocha said.
“Even Bolsonaro voters don’t like his sons very much, but many of them like Michelle, who is very charismatic.”
Her popularity had previously led to speculation that she could become a stronger presidential contender herself.
However, Jair Bolsonaro ultimately chose Flávio as the family’s presidential candidate while Michelle pursued a Senate seat.
Family tensions during campaign
The family’s rise has not been completely free of internal disagreements.
Michelle became involved in one of the more contentious moments of Flávio’s campaign after saying she had been “humiliated”, “disrespected” and “mistreated” by the senator.
Flávio subsequently apologised publicly, although the two did not campaign together after the dispute.
The episode highlighted the tensions that can exist within a family increasingly dependent on a shared political brand.
Another disagreement emerged when Renato Bolsonaro questioned Flávio’s ability to attract crowds, saying: “Flávio is not Jair. He doesn’t draw crowds.”
Despite such comments, Flávio ultimately performed strongly enough to lead the first round.
Bolsonaro name remains powerful in Brazil
The election results suggest that the Bolsonaro surname remains a significant political force in Brazil even after Jair Bolsonaro’s removal from electoral politics.
The former president is serving a 27-year sentence after being convicted over an attempt to overturn the result of the 2022 election.
Yet his influence remains evident through his family’s electoral performance and the continued strength of Bolsonaro-aligned candidates.
Flávio’s first-round result also demonstrated that the family’s support extends beyond simply transferring Jair Bolsonaro’s previous vote share.
According to the Guardian’s reporting, Flávio received more votes than his father secured in both the 2018 and 2022 presidential elections.
However, analysts have cautioned that some of his support may represent opposition to Lula rather than a personal attachment to Flávio.
That distinction could become important in the runoff because voters who backed other candidates in the first round will have to choose between Flávio and Lula.
Brazil heads towards decisive runoff
Brazil’s October 25 runoff will now determine whether Flávio Bolsonaro can convert his first-round lead into the presidency or whether Lula can recover and secure another term.
The first-round result has already produced a significant shift in the political landscape, with Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party gaining greater influence in Congress.
The result also means that the Bolsonaro family’s political reach is no longer centred exclusively on Jair Bolsonaro.
Michelle now has a Senate seat, Carlos has moved into the Senate, Jair Renan has entered the federal Congress and Renato Bolsonaro has also secured national office.
That combination gives the family multiple elected representatives capable of maintaining and expanding its political influence regardless of the outcome of the presidential runoff.

The Guardian quoted Rocha as saying that many voters continue to see the Bolsonaro family as representing an anti-system alternative.
“Although the family has been in politics for a long time, many voters still see the Bolsonaros as representing ‘renewal’ and an anti-system vote,” Rocha said.
“So, to change everything, these voters want to throw a ‘bomb’ that blows up congress and Lula. And that bomb is the Bolsonaro family.”
The Bolsonaro family political dynasty has therefore entered a new phase, with Flávio fighting for the presidency while several members of the family establish themselves in Brazil’s legislature.
The October 25 runoff will determine whether Flávio adds the presidency to that expanding family political network, while the congressional results have already ensured that Bolsonaro-aligned politicians will have a substantial presence in Brazil’s next political landscape.
