Kano Police arrest a 25-year-old suspect after he assaulted his mother for refusing to release an illegal firearm discovered in their home.
The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, following a disturbing domestic violence incident that occurred in the Panshekara Quarters area of the State.
The suspect was apprehended after allegedly assaulting his mother for refusing to hand over an illegal firearm discovered among his belongings.
According to information released by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident took place on January 25, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Police officers attached to the Panshekara Division were alerted through a distress call from concerned residents who reported violent activity within the household.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers were informed that the suspect had fled shortly before their arrival.
Further inquiry revealed that the suspect’s mother had been physically attacked after she refused to release a Barreta pistol loaded with eight rounds of live ammunition that she had discovered inside her son’s bag.
CSP Kiyawa explained that the woman became alarmed after finding the weapon and decided to withhold it, fearing for her safety and that of others in the community.
Her refusal reportedly triggered a violent reaction from her son, leading to the assault.
“The Kano Police officers who responded to the distress call confirmed that the suspect escaped the scene before their arrival,” the police spokesperson stated.
“However, the victim bravely handed over the firearm and ammunition to the officers, explaining how she discovered it and the circumstances that led to the attack.”
The woman also reportedly shared concerns about noticeable changes in her son’s behavior in recent weeks.
She told officers that his conduct had become increasingly aggressive and unpredictable following his return from a New Year celebration, which heightened her fears and suspicion.
Following the incident, the Kano Police launched a manhunt for the suspect.
Through coordinated efforts and intelligence gathering, operatives were able to track him down and effect his arrest. He is currently being held in police custody as investigations continue.
Police authorities confirmed that the recovered pistol and ammunition have been secured as exhibits, while the suspect is being interrogated to determine the source of the firearm and whether he is connected to any criminal network or prior unlawful activity within or outside the state.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the courage displayed by the victim.
He described her actions as an example of responsible citizenship and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
“The decision taken by this mother to stand her ground and surrender the weapon to the police is highly commendable,” CP Bakori said.
“Her bravery may have prevented a more tragic outcome.”
The police commissioner also used the opportunity to caution parents and guardians across the state to pay close attention to the behavior of their children and wards, particularly in an era where illegal firearms and violent tendencies pose increasing threats to public safety.
He emphasized that early intervention by family members can play a critical role in preventing crimes and urged residents to report suspicious behavior promptly rather than concealing it out of fear or stigma.
The Kano Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling illegal arms possession, domestic violence, and other threats to public peace.
The Command assured residents that all necessary legal steps would be taken once investigations are concluded, including prosecuting the suspect in accordance with the law.
