Fear has gripped residents following another Imo kidnapping incident in the Ndegwu community, Umunwoha, Owerri West Local Government Area, where gunmen abducted a nursing mother, her husband, and two other women.
The Wednesday night attack has left the quiet community in shock, highlighting the growing insecurity spreading across rural parts of Imo State.
Witnesses said the armed men, suspected to be herdsmen, invaded the community around 8 p.m. The attackers, dressed in military camouflage and armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed a small shop near a farmland, shooting sporadically before whisking away their victims into the surrounding forest.
One of the victims, a woman who later escaped, recounted her horrifying ordeal. According to her, the men approached pretending to be soldiers and customers before revealing their true motives.
“They came to our shop like buyers. We even thought they were soldiers because of their uniforms,” she said.
“But suddenly, they brought out guns and ordered us to follow them into the bush. I took the risk and ran into a nearby farmland. They fired at me, but I escaped unhurt.”
Her brave escape has been hailed by villagers, but the trauma of the Imo kidnapping remains fresh.
She revealed that as the kidnappers dragged the victims deeper into the bush, the nursing mother’s husband pleaded with them to release his wife because she was breastfeeding their baby.
The gunmen agreed to free the woman but held on to him and another victim identified as Odinaka.
Following the Imo kidnapping, local vigilante groups from Ndegwu and neighboring villages quickly organized search teams to rescue the captives. Despite combing through forests and farmlands, their efforts have yet to yield positive results.
A vigilante member, who asked not to be named, said the attackers seemed to know the terrain well.
“These criminals are familiar with the area. They escaped through bush paths that lead to abandoned farm settlements,” he explained.
The entire community has been living in fear since the incident. Many residents now avoid staying out after dusk or visiting their farms alone. Community leaders have called for urgent government intervention and stronger police presence in the rural areas.
As of the time of this report, the Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, Henry Okoye, has not issued any official statement concerning the Imo kidnapping. Repeated calls to his office were unanswered.
This silence has angered residents, who accuse the authorities of neglecting rural communities despite the rising number of abductions.
Local elders have urged Governor Hope Uzodimma to take swift action to restore confidence and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The Ndegwu abduction adds to a growing list of crimes rocking the region. Over the past few months, Owerri West has recorded multiple attacks by armed groups.
