Global Markets Stay Calm as Trump Tariff Deadline Passes

Despite rising trade tensions and a looming deadline for new U.S. tariffs, global financial markets have remained remarkably calm, showing resilience that contrasts sharply with previous periods of uncertainty during former President Donald Trump’s earlier tariff regimes.

As of July 7, 2025, the global investment community has largely shrugged off Wednesday’s tariff deadline, which marked the end of a 90-day pause on a new round of trade duties. Although Trump announced that 12 countries could face tariffs as high as 70 percent starting August 1, markets appear to have already priced in any potential volatility.

Speaking to Reuters, Jeff Blazek, co-chief investment officer at Neuberger Berman, remarked, “The market has gotten much more comfortable, more sanguine when it comes to tariff news… the worst-case scenarios are off the table now.”

Indeed, despite the sharp increase from the earlier anticipated tariff range of 10–50 percent, global stock indices are surging. The MSCI World Index, a barometer for global equity performance, has gained 24 percent since early April—when Trump made his “Liberation Day” tariff announcement that initially rattled markets with a 14 percent drop.

Investor confidence seems underpinned by the belief that trade hostilities may not escalate drastically—or at least not enough to derail global growth. Some analysts argue that the Trump administration’s mixed success in striking trade deals also contributes to this confidence. While modest deals have been reached with the UK and Vietnam, efforts to finalize agreements with India, Japan, and the EU remain stalled.

According to Rong Ren Goh of Eastspring Investments in Singapore, “If Liberation Day was the earthquake, the tariff letters will be the aftershocks. They won’t quite have the same impact on markets even if they are higher than the earlier 10 percent.”

Market sentiment has also been lifted by the recent passage of a major U.S. tax and spending bill, which permanently enshrines Trump’s 2017 tax cuts. While the move has been cheered by equity markets, bond investors are sounding caution bells. The tax overhaul could add over $3 trillion to an already ballooning $36.2 trillion federal debt, adding to inflationary concerns.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices continue to notch record highs, extending their third consecutive week of gains. In Europe, the STOXX 600 has climbed 9 percent in the last three months, showcasing widespread investor confidence.

However, fixed-income markets are telling a different story. Rising inflation expectations and the anticipated cost of higher tariffs have dented U.S. Treasury values and weighed on the dollar. The U.S. Dollar Index has declined by 11 percent in 2025 so far—its worst first-half performance since 1973.

John Pantekidis, CIO at TwinFocus in Boston, notes that while equities are benefiting from earnings optimism and tax stimulus, the risks remain. “The markets are discounting a return to tariff levels of 35 to 40 percent and anticipating an across-the-board level of 10 percent or so,” he said. “But if inflation accelerates, rising rates could derail the rally.”

As Trump’s tariff letters begin rolling out, analysts say investors are counting on flexibility in enforcement and further negotiations to soften any economic blow. So far, no significant moves have been made by foreign governments in retaliation, and no major global trade disruptions have been reported.

Still, geopolitical watchers advise caution. Rising U.S. debt, unresolved trade talks, and inflationary pressures could converge to unsettle the global economic outlook later in the year.

In the meantime, investors are banking on market resilience, solid corporate earnings, and liquidity injections from central banks to sustain momentum.
