Edo Assembly inspects key Okpebholo-led projects, ensuring accountability

Edo Assembly’s inspection committee visits major Edo projects, assessing quality, funding use, and state development under Governor Okpebholo, emphasizing accountability and collaboration.

The Edo State House of Assembly has deepened its oversight responsibilities with the commencement of a comprehensive inspection of government-funded initiatives currently being executed across the state.

Edo Assembly

This exercise, carried out by the Assembly’s ad-hoc Committee on Project Inspection and led by Speaker Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku, marks a renewed commitment to ensuring that public funds are applied effectively and that citizens fully benefit from ongoing developmental plans.

As the state intensifies infrastructural and institutional upgrades, the lawmakers say their objective is to ensure that all Edo projects meet the required standards and deliver long-term value.

Speaker Agbebaku established the inspection committee with clear directives—to verify that appropriated funds are being used responsibly, to scrutinize the quality of work being executed by contractors, and to confirm whether each project aligns with the needs of the state as approved by the legislature.

According to him, oversight remains one of the most important responsibilities of the Assembly, particularly at a time when public expectation for transparency and accountability is rising.

He emphasized that citizens deserve to see tangible results from government spending.

One of the major stops during the inspection tour was the Ramat Flyover, a strategic infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving mobility in the Benin metropolis.

The lawmakers assessed the progress of construction, examined the structural components, and interacted with the project supervisors.

Speaker Agbebaku described the flyover as an important asset for the state’s transportation system, noting that residents have long anticipated its completion.

He reiterated that the Assembly is determined to ensure that Edo projects such as the flyover are executed to world-class standards.

At Ramat Park, Agbebaku expressed satisfaction with the level of work done so far.

He acknowledged that the contractors displayed technical competence and adherence to specifications but urged them not to relent.

According to him, the people of Edo State are eager to begin using the infrastructure, and any delay increases pressure on existing road networks.

He stressed that while the Assembly recognizes the challenges associated with large civil engineering works, contractors must maintain consistency so that deadlines are met.

Another notable project visited by the inspection team was the reconstructed Army Day Secondary School.

The lawmakers toured the new classroom blocks, laboratories, perimeter fencing, administrative offices, and furnished learning areas designed to uplift the standard of basic education in the state.

For Speaker Agbebaku, the transformation of the school is a strong example of how education-related Edo projects can significantly improve the learning environment for children.

He recalled his visit to the school three years prior and noted that the difference between then and now was remarkable.

He pointed out that the school, being located in an area prone to flooding, required extra planning and investment to make it safe and conducive for students.

The installation of a drainage system, reinforcement of the foundation, and improved security architecture were among the upgrades that impressed the lawmakers.

However, Agbebaku highlighted the need for continued protection of government investments.

He noted that where large sums of public funds have been invested in infrastructure, security must be strengthened to prevent vandalism and deterioration.

While commending Governor Monday Okpebholo for prioritizing education and infrastructure, the Speaker urged the governor to replicate similar interventions in other public schools across the state.

He stressed that the Assembly was committed to supporting initiatives that enhance the prosperity and well-being of residents.

According to him, collaboration between the legislative and executive arms is key to ensuring that Edo projects continue to reflect the expectations of the people.

He added that every project visited during the tour would undergo a detailed review, and the Assembly would issue feedback to relevant ministries and contractors.

The Speaker explained that oversight extends beyond mere visitation—it involves evaluation, reporting, and continuous monitoring until full completion.

He assured the public that the Assembly would hold all stakeholders accountable, noting that effective governance depends on transparency and responsibility.

Lawmakers who accompanied the Speaker included the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Osawonyi Atu; Deputy Majority Leader and chairman of the ad-hoc committee, Hon. Adeh Isibor; Hon. Kingsley Ugabi; Hon. Yekini Idiaye; Hon. Edosa Osaro; and Hon. Abdulganiyu Akokhia.

Their presence, according to Agbebaku, underscores the collective will of the House to ensure that development in Edo State is guided by proper legislative oversight.

During conversations with contractors and project managers, the lawmakers emphasized that quality must never be compromised.

They reminded project handlers that public infrastructure should be durable, safe, and beneficial for generations.

The Assembly members noted that while several Edo projects are moving at an encouraging pace, proper supervision remains essential to prevent cost inflation, substandard delivery, or unnecessary delays.

The Speaker further explained that infrastructure is one of the engines of development, and the state cannot afford to handle it lightly.

Good schools, modern roads, bridges, and public facilities do not only improve the daily lives of citizens but also attract investment, boost productivity, and strengthen the local economy.

He said the Assembly’s oversight drive is therefore not political but developmental.
