The Niger State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Mohammed Ibrahim over the alleged murder of a commercial motorcyclist, Shehu Mohammed, who was reportedly beheaded during an attack along the Gidan-Kwano–Maikunkele road.
The incident, which allegedly involved three individuals, also resulted in the disappearance of the victim’s newly acquired Bajaj motorcycle.
Police said the stolen motorcycle and a cutlass were later recovered from the arrested suspect as investigations progressed.
The arrest was carried out by officers attached to the Maikunkele Divisional Police Headquarters in collaboration with operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), according to the command.
The police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, providing details of the events that allegedly led to the motorcyclist’s death.
How the incident allegedly happened
According to the police account, preliminary investigations indicated that Ibrahim allegedly hired the services of Shehu Mohammed on September 30, 2026, for a journey from Beji to Garatu village in Niger State.
The suspect reportedly engaged the motorcyclist in Pai village before embarking on the trip. However, what initially appeared to be an ordinary commercial transportation arrangement allegedly ended in a fatal attack.
Police said the incident occurred while the motorcyclist was returning from Garatu village at approximately midnight.
The journey took him along the Gidan-Kwano–Maikunkele road, where he was allegedly attacked by the suspect and two other individuals.
The two alleged accomplices were identified as Risku and another person whose identity was not disclosed in the police statement.
Investigators suspect that the three individuals acted together in the attack, although the full circumstances surrounding the incident are still being examined.
The police said the assailants allegedly attacked and beheaded the motorcyclist before taking away his Bajaj motorcycle.
The statement did not provide additional details about how the attack was discovered or whether the victim’s remains had been recovered. It also did not disclose the motive behind the alleged killing.
Police arrest suspect, recover motorcycle

Following investigations into the incident, operatives of the Maikunkele Division worked alongside personnel of the Violent Crime Response Unit to apprehend Ibrahim over his alleged involvement.
The police said the suspect was subsequently questioned, during which he reportedly confessed to participating in the crime.
According to Abiodun, officers also recovered the victim’s stolen motorcycle and a cutlass from the arrested suspect.
The recovered items are expected to form part of the evidence being examined as investigators work to establish what happened and determine the alleged roles of those involved.
However, the police have not publicly provided further details about the circumstances in which the motorcycle and cutlass were recovered or whether forensic examinations would be conducted on the items.
The recovery of the motorcycle represents an important aspect of the investigation, given that the victim was reportedly attacked before his motorcycle was taken away by the assailants.
The command has not disclosed whether the recovered motorcycle has been formally identified by the victim’s relatives or whether any other items connected to the incident have been found.
Two alleged accomplices still at large
While Ibrahim remains in police custody, the two other individuals allegedly connected to the incident are yet to be apprehended.
The police command said efforts were ongoing to locate Risku and the second unidentified suspect, with officers working to ensure that they are arrested and brought before the appropriate authorities.
Their arrest is expected to assist investigators in establishing the sequence of events leading to the motorcyclist’s death and determining whether additional circumstances surrounding the incident remain undisclosed.
The command has not announced any further arrests in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim is being held at the Violent Crime Response Unit as investigations continue.
Police said the investigation would focus on establishing the full circumstances of the incident and gathering the necessary evidence before the case proceeds to court.
Abiodun stated that the suspect would be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Investigation continues
The case has brought attention to the risks commercial motorcyclists may face when accepting passengers for journeys, particularly during late-night hours. However, the specific circumstances of this incident remain subject to the ongoing police investigation.
Commercial motorcyclists often depend on daily trips for their livelihoods, making the safety of both operators and passengers an important concern.
Nevertheless, the police have not issued any specific new safety directive in connection with this case.
For now, the investigation remains focused on the alleged killing of Shehu Mohammed, the recovery of his motorcycle and the arrest of the individuals suspected of involvement.
The police have yet to provide further information about the victim’s background, his family or the arrangements, if any, made following his death.
Although the arrested suspect reportedly confessed to involvement in the crime, the allegations must still be established through the judicial process.
The outstanding suspects are also entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty by a court of law.
As the investigation continues, the authorities are expected to pursue the remaining suspects and assemble the evidence required to determine criminal responsibility for the incident.
The conclusion of the investigation and subsequent court proceedings will be necessary to establish the facts surrounding the killing and ensure that the case is handled in accordance with the law.
