BBNaija Neo explodes over rape allegation, gives accuser 48 hours to retract or face court battle

Reality TV star Neo Akpofure has set social media ablaze after issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to a woman who accused him of rape on X (formerly Twitter), warning that failure to retract the claim will trigger immediate legal action.

The former housemate of Big Brother Naija Season 5 (Lockdown edition) is not taking the allegation lightly. Through his lawyers, he described the claim as false, malicious and deeply damaging to his reputation.

The controversy erupted late Tuesday when a user identified as Ms Arikan Udoka, who operates the X handle “the violently wicked (@notralia),” publicly accused the reality star of rape, alleging the incident occurred during their time at the University of Calabar.

Within hours, screenshots spread across timelines, blogs amplified the claim and hashtags began to trend. By Wednesday afternoon, the post had been deleted—but the digital footprint remained.

In a strongly worded pre-action notice dated February 18, 2026, Neo’s legal representatives demanded a public retraction and apology within 48 hours.

The letter, signed by Chief Victor O. Idiapho for E.L. Akpofure, SAN & Co., argued that the publication was defamatory and actionable under Nigerian law.

According to the legal team, the accuser herself admitted in the now-deleted post that she and Neo had been in a consensual sexual relationship before making the rape allegation.

His lawyers described the accusation as an “extremely grave criminal offence” capable of causing irreversible reputational harm.

They insisted that the claim portrays their client as a sexual offender and criminal, exposing him to public hatred, professional damage and emotional distress.

The demands are clear and non-negotiable:

  • Immediate deletion of the alleged defamatory post wherever it appears
  • A clear, unequivocal public retraction
  • A public apology acknowledging the allegation was false and misleading
  • A written undertaking not to repeat similar claims

Failure to comply, the letter warned, will result in immediate legal proceedings.

Social media court in session

The allegation surfaced at a time when conversations around sexual assault are already trending online. A separate viral claim on TikTok had sparked the hashtag #StopRapingWomen, encouraging many users to share personal experiences.

As a result, Neo’s name quickly became entangled in a broader digital conversation about consent, accountability and celebrity culture.

While some users called for a thorough investigation and urged caution before dismissing the allegation, others questioned the timing and credibility of the claim, especially given the accuser’s own acknowledgment of a prior consensual relationship.

Legal experts observing the unfolding drama say the case underscores the growing tension between social media activism and defamation law.

In Nigeria, libel laws allow individuals to seek redress when false statements harm their reputation. However, the burden of proof in rape allegations is also significant, making such public accusations highly sensitive and potentially explosive.

Reputation on the line

For Neo, the stakes are enormous.
Since leaving the BBNaija house in 2020, he has built a brand around lifestyle influencing, endorsements and media appearances. In an industry where public image directly affects income streams, even an unproven allegation can cause lasting damage.

Public figures often face a dilemma when accused online: remain silent and risk perception of guilt, or respond aggressively and risk backlash.
By choosing legal confrontation, Neo appears determined to assert his innocence and protect his brand.

So far, he has not issued a personal video statement. Instead, his response has come through formal legal channels—a move some analysts interpret as strategic, signalling seriousness rather than engaging in online banter.

The power and peril of X

The incident highlights the volatile nature of X as a platform where accusations can go viral within minutes.

A single post can spark nationwide outrage before verification occurs. Even deleted tweets often continue circulating through screenshots, making digital damage difficult to contain.

Observers note that this dynamic has created a new era of “trial by timeline,” where public opinion forms rapidly, sometimes ahead of formal investigation.

In this case, the alleged defamatory post was taken down, but conversations persist. Supporters of the accuser argue that deleting the tweet does not invalidate her claim, while Neo’s defenders insist that false allegations must carry consequences.

What happens next?

If the accuser complies with the demands within the 48-hour window, the matter could de-escalate publicly, though reputational scars may linger.
If she refuses or remains silent, Neo’s legal team has indicated they will proceed to court without further notice.

For now, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the BBNaija star.

As the story continues to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of how quickly celebrity narratives can shift—and how social media has become both megaphone and minefield.

One thing is certain: this is no longer just a trending topic. It may soon become a courtroom battle.
