Nigeria’s top table tennis star, Quadri Aruna, will face world number four Tomokazu Harimoto in a blockbuster round of 32 showdown at the US Grand Smash in Las Vegas today, Wednesday, July 9, as he continues his campaign in one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments.
The highly anticipated clash marks the seventh meeting between the two players in six years, with Aruna holding two wins in their last three encounters. However, it was Harimoto who had the upper hand most recently, cruising to a 3–0 victory at the WTT Star Contender in Doha earlier this year on January 11.
Their rivalry has produced some thrilling contests, most notably at the WTT Champions Frankfurt in November 2024, where Aruna stunned the Japanese star with a 3–2 win in a five-game classic. That followed another highlight performance from Aruna at the 2023 Singapore Smash, where he dismantled Harimoto 3–0 in one of the most emphatic wins of his career.
Still, Harimoto leads their head-to-head overall, having recorded dominant victories in their earlier matchups — including a 3–0 win at the 2021 Star Contender Doha and two emphatic triumphs in 2019: a 4–1 result at the World Cup in Chengdu and a 4–0 rout at the Hong Kong Open.
Now 22, Harimoto continues to be one of the most consistent performers on the ITTF circuit, boasting a 76% win rate in 2025. With his trademark explosive footwork, rapid-fire counters, and relentless aggression, the Japanese star enters the match as the third seed and a firm favourite.
But Aruna will take confidence from his opening-round performance on Monday, where he swept past China’s Zhou Qihao in straight games — 11–9, 11–8, 11–7 — in just under 30 minutes.
Despite a slow start in the first game, where Zhou raced to a 5–0 lead, Aruna calmly worked his way back, drawing level at 6–6 before taking control with his trademark forehand loops and strategic serves. He edged the opener 11–9 and carried the momentum into the second game, overturning a 3–5 deficit before clinching it 11–8 after a well-timed timeout at 8–9.
Zhou attempted a late rally in the third game, but Aruna’s sharp angles and constant pressure proved too much, as the African champion wrapped up the match 11–7 to seal a commanding 3–0 win.
Aruna won a total of 33 points in the match — 19 on his own serve and 14 on return — and showed resilience throughout, matching Zhou’s longest point streak and coming from behind multiple times.
With up to 2,000 ITTF World Ranking points available for the tournament winner, every round at the US Smash holds significant implications. A strong showing in Las Vegas could boost Aruna’s global standing, which has dipped slightly following a string of early exits earlier in the year.
Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian Olajide Omotayo exited the tournament in the preliminary round. The former African Games champion fell 3–1 to Victor Xie in the opening qualifier, with set scores of 11–9, 6–11, 4–11, 8–11.
All eyes now turn to Aruna, who faces a tough but familiar opponent in Harimoto — and another chance to prove himself on one of table tennis’ biggest stages.
