Nigeria’s organised private sector has raised fresh concerns over the sustainability of ongoing economic reforms, warning that political pressures ahead of the 2027 general elections could derail hard-won fiscal gains.

The caution comes from the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), which noted that election cycles in Nigeria have historically been accompanied by policy uncertainty, spending pressures, and weakened reform discipline.

NECA warns election could disrupt fiscal reforms

Speaking on the outlook for the Nigerian economy, NECA’s Director-General, Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, said the approach of the 2027 elections introduces a layer of risk that could undermine recent fiscal and monetary adjustments designed to stabilise the economy.

According to him, maintaining reform momentum in an election period requires strong institutional discipline—something that has often proven difficult in Nigeria’s political landscape.

He explained that fiscal consolidation efforts, including subsidy removal, exchange rate adjustments, and revenue reforms, could face setbacks if political actors prioritise short-term electoral gains over long-term economic stability.

“Election cycles typically come with heightened uncertainty,” he noted, adding that governments may be tempted to relax fiscal discipline through increased spending or policy reversals aimed at appeasing voters.

This, he warned, could weaken investor confidence and slow down economic recovery efforts already underway.

Rising inflation risks deepen concerns

Beyond political risks, NECA also highlighted the potential impact of global oil price volatility on Nigeria’s fragile macroeconomic environment.

Oyerinde warned that a sharp increase in crude oil prices—particularly within the $140 to $150 per barrel range—could trigger renewed inflationary pressures, especially in fuel-dependent sectors.

Such a development, he said, would likely reverse recent progress in moderating inflation and could force the Central Bank of Nigeria to maintain or even tighten its current monetary stance for longer than anticipated.

Higher fuel and food prices, he added, would place additional strain on households already grappling with cost-of-living challenges, potentially escalating social pressures across the country.

Analysts note that Nigeria’s inflation dynamics remain highly sensitive to energy costs, given the economy’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products and logistics networks driven by fuel consumption.

Reform gains face political headwinds

Nigeria has embarked on a series of structural reforms in recent years, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange liberalisation, aimed at restoring fiscal balance and improving economic efficiency.

However, NECA cautioned that the success of these reforms depends heavily on policy consistency—something that could be tested as political campaigns intensify ahead of 2027.

The group stressed that any reversal or weakening of these policies could erode gains made in revenue mobilisation, public finance management, and investor sentiment.

“Fiscal and monetary reforms require continuity,” Oyerinde emphasised, noting that inconsistent implementation could discourage both local and foreign investors.

Opportunities amid economic transition

Despite the risks, NECA pointed to emerging opportunities within Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape, particularly in sectors driven by innovation and structural shifts.

Oyerinde identified the creative economy, fintech, and digital services as high-growth areas capable of generating employment and boosting economic diversification.

He noted that targeted investments in infrastructure—such as creative hubs, production studios, and equipment financing—could help formalise industries like Nollywood and the music sector, transforming them into significant sources of jobs and export earnings.

Additionally, the ongoing energy transition presents opportunities in renewable energy development, including solar installations, mini-grid systems, and energy efficiency services.

“These sectors can absorb labour, stimulate entrepreneurship, and contribute to sustainable growth if supported by the right policies,” he said.

AfCFTA and industrial prospects

NECA also underscored the importance of leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area to drive industrial growth and expand Nigeria’s export base.

According to the association, the combination of regional trade integration and import substitution strategies presents a pathway for revitalising the manufacturing sector.

However, Oyerinde stressed that realising these opportunities would require addressing longstanding structural challenges, including unreliable power supply, limited access to credit, and regulatory bottlenecks.

He added that improved infrastructure investment—funded through enhanced fiscal space from oil revenues—could unlock productivity gains across key sectors of the economy.

Call for policy discipline

NECA concluded by urging policymakers to prioritise economic stability over political expediency as the election cycle approaches.

The association emphasised that safeguarding reform gains is critical to sustaining growth, reducing poverty, and improving living standards.

“Economic transformation is a long-term process,” Oyerinde said. “It requires consistency, discipline, and a commitment to policies that support productivity and investment.”

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, the balance between political considerations and economic priorities is expected to shape the country’s reform trajectory—and ultimately determine the durability of its recovery efforts.
