Zamfara security forces foil deadly banditry attack

The Zamfara State Police Command has successfully thwarted a planned assault by suspected armed gunmen, preventing a deadly escalation of banditry in Ruwan Dorowa District.

The swift intervention by security forces highlights the ongoing commitment of the state police and military to protect residents from criminal elements.

According to a statement released on Monday, March 2, 2026, by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, the attempted attack occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1.

A large group of armed bandits reportedly advanced into the community via the Maru axis, targeting residents who were observing Isha’i congregational prayers.

The timing of the attack suggested that the perpetrators aimed to inflict maximum terror on the local population.

Acting on credible intelligence about the impending threat, the Divisional Police Officer promptly mobilised the division’s strike force.

This rapid deployment was carried out in close coordination with military personnel, ensuring a combined and highly effective response.

The collaboration of police and military units underscores the state’s proactive stance against the rising incidents of banditry, which have increasingly threatened public safety in Zamfara State.

Upon the joint security team’s arrival, the gunmen reportedly opened fire, initiating a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Despite the aggression of the attackers, the security operatives were able to overpower the bandits using superior firepower, strategic positioning, and coordinated tactics.

During the confrontation, some of the fleeing attackers were believed to have sustained gunshot injuries as they retreated into the surrounding bush.

No casualties were reported among the residents or security personnel, a testament to the effectiveness of the rapid response.

DSP Yazid Abubakar emphasized that patrols and surveillance operations in and around Ruwan Dorowa have been significantly intensified to prevent further threats.

The heightened presence of security forces aims to reassure residents and demonstrate the command’s unwavering commitment to protecting communities from banditry.

The police spokesperson also urged members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative, highlighting the critical role that timely and credible information can play in supporting security operations.

The attack, foiled before it could cause harm, is part of a larger trend of banditry-related threats in Zamfara State.

These incidents, often targeting villages and districts with minimal warning, have prompted the authorities to adopt more aggressive and preventive strategies.

The collaboration between police strike forces and military personnel has been particularly effective in deterring attacks, forcing gunmen to retreat and limiting the impact on civilian populations.

Security analysts note that the sustained offensive operations in areas prone to banditry have helped reduce the frequency of large-scale attacks.

However, they stress the importance of continuous vigilance, intelligence gathering, and community cooperation.

Residents are urged to report suspicious movements, unusual gatherings, or any activity that could signal potential threats, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of security measures.

The Zamfara State Police Command reiterated its determination to maintain public safety and rid the state of criminal elements responsible for banditry.

DSP Abubakar assured the people of Ruwan Dorowa and surrounding communities that the command remains resolute in pursuing all individuals and groups who engage in violent crimes.

The successful prevention of this attack serves as both a warning to criminal actors and a reassurance to citizens that the state is capable of defending them against threats.

Beyond immediate law enforcement measures, the command also emphasized ongoing community engagement initiatives.

These include sensitization campaigns on personal and communal security, training for local vigilante groups, and the promotion of cooperative networks between residents and security forces.

By fostering trust and collaboration, authorities hope to create a resilient environment that diminishes the influence of banditry in vulnerable areas.
