Woman arraigned over false sexual assault allegation against husband

A woman in Enugu faces court for making a false sexual assault allegation against her husband, sparking debate on child protection and legal accountability.

A 29-year-old woman, Chisom Okonkwo, has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Enugu after allegedly making a false sexual assault allegation against her husband, Ozioma Okonkwo, involving their two young daughters.

The case has drawn widespread attention online, raising critical questions about child protection, marital disputes, and legal accountability.

According to reports, the incident allegedly occurred during a marital dispute in August 2024 at Emene, Enugu.

Chisom reportedly claimed her husband sexually abused their daughters, aged two and five, and later made the allegations public.

The accusations quickly became the subject of social media debate and public scrutiny.

Following the report, Ozioma Okonkwo was arrested on October 25, 2025. Medical examinations on the children, however, found no evidence of abuse, leading to his release.

Police subsequently investigated the matter further, suspecting that the mother may have provided intentionally misleading information.

Authorities accused Chisom of giving false information to detectives at the State Intelligence Department. According to law enforcement, her actions harmed her husband’s reputation and exposed him to public ridicule.

The case is being prosecuted under Sections 325 and 154 of the Enugu State Criminal Code, which address defamation and providing false information to law enforcement.

The court has not yet disclosed Chisom’s plea or potential bail conditions. Legal experts say cases like this must be handled with care to ensure justice for both the accused and children potentially at risk.

The case has provoked mixed reactions online, highlighting the sensitivity of allegations involving children.

Some commentators insist that false claims must be punished to protect individuals and families, while others caution that fear of disbelief should not prevent genuine victims from reporting abuse.

“This case underscores the importance of thorough investigations,” said a legal expert. “While false allegations are harmful, authorities must ensure that actual cases of abuse are never overlooked. Balancing child protection and legal accountability is critical.”

Under Enugu State’s Criminal Code, knowingly providing false information to law enforcement can lead to prosecution.

Section 325 deals with defamation, penalizing statements that damage someone’s reputation, while Section 154 criminalizes providing false information to authorities.

Cases involving false sexual assault allegations are especially sensitive because they can undermine public trust in child protection systems.

Courts often conduct extensive investigations, including medical exams, witness statements, and psychological assessments, before determining the outcome.

False allegations can have serious repercussions beyond the courtroom. Experts note that such claims can strain family relationships, traumatize children, and divide communities.

Even when allegations are unproven, the accused may face social ostracism and long-lasting reputational harm.

“False sexual assault allegations can deeply affect families,” said a child psychologist. “Children may experience confusion and emotional distress, while parents may face public judgment. Careful handling of these cases is essential.”

The Okonkwo case highlights the delicate balance between protecting children and ensuring the legal system safeguards individuals from wrongful accusations.

Authorities emphasize that false claims are punishable under the law, but genuine reports of abuse must be taken seriously.

“Protecting children remains our top priority,” a senior police officer in Enugu stated.

“At the same time, false allegations must be addressed to prevent injustice. Every claim is investigated carefully to maintain fairness and credibility.”

As public interest continues, experts stress the importance of education, mediation, and legal guidance in marital disputes.

Early intervention can prevent false allegations while ensuring real cases of abuse are handled effectively.

The arraignment of Chisom Okonkwo for allegedly making a false sexual assault allegation against her husband serves as a cautionary example of the legal and social consequences of such actions.

The case emphasizes the need for responsible reporting, thorough investigations, and proper child protection measures.

As the Enugu Magistrate Court continues proceedings, the outcome may shape public discourse on family law, accountability, and the credibility of abuse allegations.

The case illustrates the challenges authorities face in balancing the protection of children with the rights of individuals wrongly accused, underlining the importance of justice, fairness, and social responsibility.
