US President Donald Trump has reportedly set a Christmas deadline for Ukraine to finalize a peace deal with Russia, raising alarm in Kyiv over sovereignty and territorial control.
During a two-hour call, Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, reportedly conveyed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Washington expected a peace agreement before the end of December.
Kyiv officials expressed concern that the proposed timeline does not account for sufficient security guarantees from the United States or the complexities of ongoing territorial disputes with Russia.
The main sticking point remains Ukraine’s refusal to cede the Donbas regions, including areas of Donetsk and Luhansk, which remain under Ukrainian control and are non-negotiable in peace talks.
According to the Wall Street Journal, unnamed officials in Washington insist the goal is not to pressure Kyiv into accepting an unwanted deal, but to secure a long-term, mutually acceptable agreement.

Senator Richard Blumenthal publicly criticized Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, claiming they appear biased against Ukraine, urging the president to replace them with more neutral mediators for peace negotiations.
Blumenthal told Ukraine’s Suspilne broadcaster: “The entire peace plan needs to be thrown out. Witkoff and Kushner seem to side with Russia instead of conducting fair negotiations with Kyiv.”
The U.S. envoy team has repeatedly emphasized that they are negotiating directly with Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine’s peace delegation, highlighting Washington’s stated commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Despite these assurances, Kyiv remains cautious. President Zelensky has repeatedly stressed that any agreement must include clear security guarantees, protection of Ukrainian territories, and continued international military support.
Meanwhile, Trump has continued his criticism of European nations, calling them weak and decaying, arguing that their inaction emboldens Russia and complicates Ukraine’s defense against ongoing aggression.
Pope Leo XIV has intervened diplomatically, stressing that Europe must play a central role in any future Ukraine peace deal, criticizing past U.S. efforts to sideline European involvement in negotiations.
Leo, speaking from Castel Gandolfo, emphasized the Vatican’s concern over the humanitarian impact of the conflict, including efforts to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children taken by Russian authorities.
The French presidency announced a Coalition of the Willing videoconference for Thursday, involving European and NATO allies, to discuss ongoing peace efforts, as well as coordination with Kyiv on diplomatic strategy.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to brief coalition members on Zelensky’s European tour and recent meetings with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The coalition meeting aims to balance U.S. pressure for rapid results with European insistence on a carefully negotiated peace, emphasizing that territorial and security issues cannot be rushed.
Ukrainian troops in frontline towns, such as Dobropillia, continue evacuation and civilian protection operations, as Russian drone strikes repeatedly target residential buildings, energy infrastructure, and critical transportation networks.
Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk reported that Russian drones attacked the Odesa gas transport system, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid continuous Russian targeting.
Kyiv has sought alternative energy routes, including importing U.S. liquefied natural gas via Greece and Poland, to mitigate the impact of repeated Russian strikes on pipelines and interconnectors.
The situation at sea has also intensified. Ukraine’s SSU security service detained a cargo vessel in Odesa allegedly belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet, seizing 16 crew members and illegally transported agricultural goods.
