The Lagos State House of Assembly has been transformed into a fortress, with an unprecedented security presence, as the House holds its plenary session today.

Journalists were barred from entering the assembly complex, with security operatives citing “instructions” as the reason.

The development comes on the heels of the ongoing leadership tussle in the House, which saw the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025. Obasa was replaced by Mojisola Meranda, but he has since insisted that he remains the Speaker of the House.

The security presence at the assembly complex is tight, with a combined team of policemen, civil defence, and officers of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Security Corps mounting the assembly inside and outside. Roads leading to the assembly have been barricaded, with policemen stationed at strategic points.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Meranda may resign as Speaker today, paving the way for Obasa to reassume the position. However, the situation remains fluid, with lawmakers and officials tight-lipped about the developments.

Obasa has maintained that he remains the Speaker of the House, despite his removal by over 30 lawmakers. He has dragged the Assembly and Meranda to court, challenging his removal.

The crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly began on January 13, 2025, when over 30 lawmakers removed Obasa as Speaker. Meranda was subsequently elected as the new Speaker. However, Obasa has refused to recognize the new leadership, insisting that his removal was unconstitutional.

The leadership tussle in the Lagos State House of Assembly has sparked intense interest, with many Nigerians watching the developments with bated breath. The crisis has raised concerns about the stability of the state’s politics and the potential implications for governance.

As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the state’s politics. The Lagos State House of Assembly is expected to make a statement on the matter soon.
