Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) has continued to generate intense political debate, both within Rivers State and across the country.

Leading the delegation was the Rivers State APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, accompanied by top party leaders, including the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo.
Addressing party stakeholders and supporters at the event, the governor described his move as a “return of favour” to President Tinubu.
He explained that while he had always supported the President’s leadership and vision for Nigeria, operating from a different political platform made collaboration more complex.
The Fubara defection, he said, removes those barriers and places Rivers State firmly within the national governing structure.
The governor used vivid political imagery to illustrate his point, noting that while they previously worked from “different flats,” being in the same party now means they are “in one flat,” making coordination easier and promises easier to fulfil.
He added that his decision would help create a smooth political pathway for President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, particularly in Rivers State.
Beyond symbolism, Fubara pledged practical commitment to strengthening the APC’s structure within the state.
He assured party executives that his administration would provide full backing to ensure the party remains vibrant, organised, and competitive.
According to him, the survival and growth of the party would now be treated as a shared responsibility between the government and party leadership.
“I want to make it clear that the APC must stand as the leading progressive force in Rivers State,” the governor said.
He added that from the moment of his defection, the needs of the party leadership and its operational structure would receive his attention and support.
