The Syrian government has strongly condemned recent Israeli airstrikes on several sites in and around the cities of Homs and Latakia, describing them as a “blatant violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic”.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated that these attacks pose a direct threat to Syrian security and regional stability.
According to the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the ministry called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to take a firm stand against these Israeli attacks, which it considers a flagrant violation of international law and UN principles.
The United Kingdom-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that Israeli warplanes targeted a Syrian air force base in Homs, resulting in significant explosions, although no casualties were initially reported.
In Latakia, Israeli fighter jets attacked a military barracks, prompting ambulances to rush to the scene. Despite the intensity of the strikes, there were no immediate reports of casualties in Latakia either.
These attacks are part of a broader pattern of Israeli aggression against Syria, with the Israeli military having launched hundreds of strikes on military sites and assets across the country since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December.
Israel’s actions have also included expanding its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, a move that violates a 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.
According to SOHR, Israel has carried out almost 100 attacks so far this year, including 86 air strikes and 11 ground attacks, resulting in the destruction of 135 sites and the deaths of 61 people.
The Syrian government has denounced Israel’s actions as “part of a series of aggressive escalations pursued by Israel against Syrian territory”, rejecting any attempts to undermine its sovereignty or harm its national security.
The recent attacks come amid heightened tensions and follow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s promotion of a vision for a “Greater Israel”, which includes claims to parts of Syria, among other territories.
