Police launch manhunt after violent Ibadan bank robbery

Police launch manhunt after violent Ibadan bank robbery where a depositor was robbed and an officer injured. Investigation ongoing to arrest the culprits.

In a shocking incident on Monday morning, a brazen Ibadan bank robbery left a middle-aged depositor robbed of a substantial sum of money and a police officer severely injured while attempting to intervene.

The robbery occurred around Osuntokun Avenue, one of Ibadan’s busy commercial areas, and has raised concerns about rising insecurity in the city.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victim had just completed a withdrawal at a local branch of a new generation bank when he was trailed by armed suspects.

The victim was traveling in a metallic grey Nissan Primera with license plate number EPE 901 PS when the gunmen intercepted him at Osuntokun area.

One witness said: “The unsuspecting victim was forcibly dispossessed of a large amount of money by the armed men. A police officer who tried to intervene was also seriously injured.”

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the attack through the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso. According to him, the robbery occurred around 8 a.m. along Secretariat Road, Agodi. CSP Osifeso said:

“A bank depositor traveling in a metallic grey Nissan Primera with license plate number EPE 901 PS was tracked and forcibly robbed of a substantial, yet-to-be-ascertained amount of cash.

“An officer from the Oyo State Police Command sustained severe injuries during a confrontation when his team engaged the suspects in a bid to prevent further chaos.”

Thankfully, no fatalities were reported in this Ibadan bank robbery, and the injured officer is receiving immediate medical attention at a secure healthcare facility. Authorities described his intervention as crucial in preventing additional harm during the attack.

Residents in the area expressed shock and concern following the incident. Many called for increased security at banks and along major roads, citing rising fears about armed robbery in Ibadan.

“It is frightening that routine banking activities are now unsafe,” said one local business owner.

“We urge the authorities to quickly apprehend these criminals.”

This Ibadan bank robbery is not an isolated case. Over the past year, there have been multiple reports of armed attacks on bank depositors and commercial establishments in Ibadan and other parts of Oyo State.

Experts warn that criminals are becoming more organized, often surveilling victims before executing rapid and violent robberies.

CSP Osifeso urged residents to provide any credible information that could help identify and arrest the suspects.

“We appeal to the public to come forward with timely information, as it will aid in the swift apprehension of those responsible for this criminal act,” he said. “A thorough investigation is underway, and updates will be provided as soon as possible.”

Security experts recommend that bank depositors take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of being targeted. These include avoiding carrying large sums of cash alone, using cashless transactions when possible, and varying travel routes to and from banks.

Community vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities are also crucial in preventing similar armed robbery Ibadan incidents.

Authorities have also indicated plans to increase police presence in strategic areas to deter future attacks. The Oyo State Police Command assured the public that both conventional and intelligence-led operations are being employed to track down the perpetrators of this Ibadan bank robbery.

Local leaders and community groups have emphasized the importance of cooperation between residents and law enforcement. Timely information from the public can be decisive in catching suspects and preventing subsequent attacks.

“We must all play a role in stopping criminals who prey on innocent citizens and undermine the city’s security,” one community leader stated.

Residents are urged to contact the nearest police station or the Oyo State Police Command hotline with any information on the identities, movements, or hideouts of the suspects. Authorities emphasized that public cooperation is critical for ensuring justice and safety in the city.

The recent Ibadan bank robbery highlights the need for stronger security measures in commercial districts, particularly around financial institutions.

While the rapid response of the police officer mitigated further harm, the incident underscores the persistent threat posed by organized criminal groups in Ibadan.

The incident serves as a stern reminder for bank depositors, law enforcement, and community members to remain vigilant.

Adopting safety measures, reporting suspicious activities, and cooperating with authorities are essential to preventing future bank depositor attacks and ensuring the city remains safe for residents and businesses alike.
